What Does IDGI Mean?

This acronym stands for a relatively popular expression

Did you send a message to a friend and get "IDGI" as a reply? If so, you're going to need to know what this acronym stands for to plan your response.

IDGI stands for:

I Don't Get It

When someone says something to you, you either get it or you don't get it. When you don't, you can use IDGI as a response.

IDGI

What IDGI Really Means

IDGI roughly translates to: That doesn't make sense to me.

When you don't understand (or get) something, you're simply saying that your brain isn't quite receiving the message and that your mind can't grasp the concept or logic behind it.

How IDGI Is Used

IDGI is often a response to someone who shares a message that lacks the information needed for the receiver to understand it. When you respond with IDGI, you're telling the other person that they need to clarify what they said for you to understand and continue the conversation.

IDGI can also be used to express confusion about something that's out of your control (or anyone else's). In this case, it isn't a matter of needing someone to give you more information to get what's happening. Instead, it's a need to go beyond the limitations of your memory or span of awareness.

Examples of IDGI in Use

Example 1

Friend #1: YTrsfsd39we90f

Friend #2: IDGI

Friend #1: Sorry my cat just decided to sit on my phone.

In this example, IDGI is used as a simple, standalone reply. Friend #2 uses IDGI to tell Friend #1 that their message doesn't make sense to them. Then, Friend #2 responds by clarifying with additional information.

Example 2

Friend #1: You have to upload the file to the group and make it public. Then, everyone should be able to access it.

Friend #2: Upload where? Public? IDGI...

This example demonstrates how IDGI can be used to communicate a lack of knowledge or understanding. Friend #2 uses IDGI to respond to Friend #1's vague instructions for a task they need to complete, possibly in hopes of receiving more detailed instructions to complete it.

Example 3

Friend #1: When are you leaving?

Friend #2: As soon as I find my keys...I was just holding them a second ago! IDGI!

This example shows how IDGI can be used to communicate confusion about the state of reality. Friend #2 uses IDGI to help them better express how bewildered they are about where their keys could have gone.

The Opposite of IDGI

The opposite of IDGI is IGI, which stands for I Got It, or I Get It. You can use IGI in a conversation to confirm that you follow what the other person is saying and you understand exactly what they mean.

Similar Acronyms to IDGI

There's a handful of acronyms out there that start with "I Don't," but only a couple are used in a similar way to IDGI for expressing confusion, lack of understanding, or doubt. These include:

  1. IDG: I Don't Get. If you want to specify exactly what you don't get, use IDG instead of IDGI. For example, you could say, "IDG how time goes by so fast."
  2. IDK: I Don't Know. When someone asks you a question and you're not sure how to answer, say IDK.
  3. IDTS: I Don't Think So. A variation of IDK. IDTS is used in response to a question, but unlike IDK it makes you appear as if you're leaning toward a negative viewpoint rather than remaining neutral.
