Katy Perry burst on the pop scene with this edgy, controversial, and thoroughly catchy debut hit. It was her first hit with pop masters Dr. Luke and Max Martin. The lyrics of the song generated controversy. The questions raised ranged from whether the song is actually homophobic to whether or not Katy Perry herself had kissed a girl. In some parts of the world the song was banned, but it was a #1 pop hit across Europe and certified four times platinum for sales in the US.

Rihanna - "Take a Bow"

For the fourth consecutive summer, Rihanna had one of the 10 biggest hits of the season. "Take a Bow" was released as a single from the deluxe reissue of Rihanna's album Good Girl Gone Bad. It became Rihanna's third #1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100. "Take a Bow" made a huge chart leap from #53 to #1 in the week of its release for digital sales.

Jesse McCartney - "Leavin'"

Jesse McCartney shifted his sound strongly in the direction of r&b and came up with the biggest hit single of his career. It is the lead single from his third studio album Departure. The song was co-written and co-produced by Tricky Stewart and The-Dream. "Leavin'" reached #1 on both the pop songs chart and the dance chart.

Chris Brown - "Forever"

This single brought Chris Brown back to #1 on the pop singles chart for the first time since his debut "Run It!" It was released as a single from the deluxe reissue of the album Exclusive. "Forever" began life as a commercial jingle for Doublemint gum and then was expanded into a full song.

Leona Lewis is the biggest new UK female pop artist in decades. "Bleeding Love" became the bestselling single worldwide of 2008. It received Grammy Award nominations for Record of the Year and Best Female Pop Vocal. "Bleeding Love" was written by OneRepublic's Ryan Tedder and Jesse McCartney. It was intended for Jesse McCartney's album Departure, but the record label did not like the song.

Natasha Bedingfield - "Pocketful of Sunshine"

It took it some time to catch on, but Natasha Bedingfield's "Pocketful of Sunshine" has moved more than a few pop fans. It was originally written by songwriter and producer John Shanks, and then Natasha Bedingfield and Danielle Brisebois added additional material. "Pocketful Of Sunshine" was a top 5 pop hit in the US, reached #3 on the adult contemporary chart, and topped the dance chart.

"Lollipop" helped propel Lil Wayne to selling over 1 million copies of his album Tha Carter III in its first week of release. Static Major, featured rapper on the song, died two weeks before the release of "Lollipop." The song spent five weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified five times platinum. It also reached #1 on both the rap and R&B charts. "Lollipop" won a Grammy Award for Best Rap Song.

Featuring Miley Cyrus' half-brother Trace, Metro Station emerged out of the glut of young pop punk bands to land in the top 5 of the pop singles chart. In an unusual occurrence for a pop punk band, "Shake It" reached the top 15 of the adult pop radio chart.
