Top 10 New Christmas Songs For 2014

In addition to performances of your favorite Christmas classics, each year brings brand new Christmas songs to hear for the first time. These are 10 of the best new holiday tunes for 2014.

A capella singing group Pentatonix have the most popular new Christmas album of the year. It entered the album chart at #9 and rose to #2. This is the heartwarming title song which celebrates the spirit of a traditional holiday.  The song was written by Katy Lou Clark and Penny Lea Clark of the bluegrass trio Purple Hulls. The album That's Christmas To Me sold more than one million copies in its first year of release, only the fourth album to do so in 2014. The song landed in the top 10 of the adult contemporary chart.

In 2013 Ariana Grande released the holiday EP Christmas Kisses for her fans. In 2014 recorded the single "Santa Tell Me." The sound of the song may remind listeners of Amy Grant's 1991 smash hit "Baby Baby." The lyrics look to Santa Claus for romantic advice. Ariana Grande performed "Santa Tell Me" live at the A Very Grammy Christmas concert. The song topped the holiday songs chart, reached the top 10 of the adult contemporary chart and broke into the top 40 at both adult pop and mainstream pop radio.

Meghan Trainor - "I'll Be Home"

Meghan Trainor was red-hot as both an artist and songwriter in late 2014. Her single "Lips Are Movin" was soaring up pop charts in the footsteps of her #1 smash "All About That Bass." She was one of the songwriters of Fifth Harmony's new single "Sledgehammer," and Meghan Trainor delivered a great new Christmas ballad. It was included on a holiday EP collected by Epic Records head L.A. Reid.

Every year since 2006 the Killers have recorded a new holiday single for their fans. All of the proceeds of their Christmas songs go to benefit Product Red. 2014's new song tells the story of a lump of coal who becomes something very valuable. The accompanying animated music video was first broadcast on Jimmy Kimmel Live. It was created in the style of Rankin/Bass TV specials of the 1960s like Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. "Joel the Lump of Coal" broke into the top 30 of the rock songs chart.

Idina Menzel - "December Prayer"

Idina Menzel kicked off 2014 climbing the charts with her version of "Let It Go" from the hit movie Frozen. She closed out the the year with one of the top hit Christmas albums of the season Holiday Wishes. The song "Christmas Prayer" is a beautiful ballad co-written by Grammy and Golden Globe nominee Charlie Midnight. The album peaked at #6 on the overall album chart, the highest charting solo release of Idina Menzel's career. It was also the second best selling Christmas album of 2014.

Over the Rhine are a critically acclaimed folk music band from Ohio. The title song from their holiday album Blood Oranges In the Snow incorporates beautiful imagery as it celebrates winter pleasures of home and family. Over the Rhine are celebrated as leaders in contemporary folk music in the US.

The celebrated a capella group Straight No Chaser came together at Indiana University in 1996. They became stars when their 1998 video of "The 12 Days of Christmas" went viral in 1997 and led to a five album record deal with Atlantic in 2008. Their 2014 holiday single speaks of Christmas messaging in the era of smartphones. The featured vocalist is Kristen Bell who was also on the charts in the holiday season with the song "Do You Want To Build a Snowman?" from the Frozen soundtrack.

Country star Sara Evans released her second Christmas album in 2014. It has climbed into the top 25 on the country album chart and broke into the lower reaches of the overall album chart. The title song is an uptempo celebration of the wonders of Christmas time. Several of the album's tracks were previously released in other Christmas compilations

Elizabeth Chan quit her job as a successful media executive a few years back to devote her life to writing and recording new Christmas songs. "Something About the Holidays" celebrates the Christmas spirit and is included on the 2014 album Christmas In the City.

Pianist Jim Brickman has charted at adult contemporary radio more than 25 times since 1996. The new song "That Silent Night" featuring country music legend Kenny Rogers helps celebrate a new exhibit Through the Years at the Country Music Hall of Fame. It was included on the album On a Winter's Night: The Songs and Spirit of Christmas. Kenny Rogers included the song on his 2015 Christmas album Once Again It's Christmas which reached the top 3 on the holiday album chart.
