2002 - "No Such Thing"

John Mayer's debut single "No Such Thing" was released in April 2002 as his first album Room for Squares was beginning to climb the charts. It was co-written with his early career collaborator Clay Cook. The song was written in response to high school guidance counselors suggesting to students that should follow predictable life paths. "No Such Thing" peaked at #13 on the Billboard Hot 100 while climbing into the top 10 at both adult pop and mainstream pop radio.

2002 - "Your Body Is a Wonderland"

John Mayer has stated that he wrote "Your Body Is a Wonderland" about his first girlfriend that he dated when he was 14. He originally called the song "Strawberry Wonderland."

It was released as the second single from the album Room For Squares. "Your Body Is a Wonderland" earned John Mayer a Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal. It reached the top 20 on the US singles chart and climbed to #3 at adult pop radio. After spawning two top 20 pop hit singles, Room For Squares hit the top 10 on the album chart and ultimately sold more than four million copies.

2004 - "Daughters"

The song "Daughters" encourages fathers to provide support to their daughters when they are children because it will have an impact on adult relationships with men. Although he has told somewhat different stories, John Mayer has said an ex-girlfriend's life inspired the song.

"Daughters" was released as the third single from the album Heavier Things. It earned a Grammy Award for Song of the Year and climbed to #1 on the adult pop radio chart. It also reached #2 on the adult contemporary chart. The accompanying music video features Australian model Gemma Ward.

2006 - "Waiting On the World To Change"

John Mayer's first single from the album Continuum addresses the apathy about world issues among his generation. It was the first overtly political single released by the artist. The accompanying music video was directed by Philip Andelman who has worked with a wide range of artists since 2004.

John earned a Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal for "Waiting On the World To Change." It reached #1 on the adult contemporary chart and #2 at adult pop radio while reaching #14 on the Billboard Hot 100.

2007 - "Gravity"

John Mayer stated in concert that "Gravity" was the "most important song I've ever written." It is strongly influenced by blues. Alicia Keys performs background vocals near the end of the song. It was released as the third single from the album Continuum. A live recording of "Gravity" earned a Grammy Award for Best Solo Rock Vocal. Rolling Stone selected "Gravity" as one of the top 100 guitar songs of all time. "Gravity" became John Mayer's seventh top 10 hit at adult pop radio.

John Mayer wrote the song "Say" for the soundtrack to the movie The Bucket List. It was the first single of John Mayer's career released separately from one of his studio albums. Later, it was added to the re-release edition of Continuum. "Say" won John Mayer a Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal. It also earned a nomination for Best Song Written for Visual Media. "Say" reached #2 on the Adult Contemporary chart, #6 at adult pop radio and #12 on the Billboard Hot 100, John Mayer's highest charting song on that chart.

"Who Says" was released as the first single from John Mayer's fourth studio album Battle Studies. It received some critical complaints about the explicit reference to drug use. "Who Says" debuted inside the top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100, but it failed to climb higher. The song reached the top 20 at adult pop radio and broke into the top 40 on the rock songs chart. Battle Studies became John Mayer's second #1 album and earned platinum certification for sales.

"Half Of My Heart" is more pop-oriented than most of John Mayer's singles. It features vocals from Taylor Swift. The lyrics are assumed to reference the controversial dating relationship between 32-year-old Mayer and 19-year-old Swift. The song peaked inside the top 10 at both adult contemporary and adult pop radio. It made more impact at mainstream pop radio than most John Mayer songs peaking at #22.

Co-written and performed with pop superstar Katy Perry, "Who You Love" received some of the strongest positive critical reviews of John Mayer's career.

At the time the song was released, the pair were linked romantically in the media. "Who You Love" was co-produced by Don Was and released as the third single from the album Paradise Valley. The accompanying music video was directed by Sophie Muller, one of the most successful of all video directors dating back to clips by the Eurythmics in the 1980s.
