Top 5 Anime for Star Wars Fans

Fans share their favorite anime series to show to Star Wars fans.

We all know that one person. That person who’s really into Star Wars and maybe even other science fiction movies and TV shows yet refuses to watch anime due to their preconceptions about what type of stories anime can tell.

With Star Wars Episode VII The Force Awakens just around the corner, I thought now would be the perfect time to ask our amazing readers which anime series or movie they recommend to their friends who are really into Star Wars.

Here are some of the best suggestions. Note: Some responses have been edited for grammar and succinctness.

Outlaw Star

Outlaw Star. It's very space opera just like Star Wars. The storyline is kind of similar too - the main hero, Gene Starwind, gets involved in something way over his head, like Luke, but becomes stronger for it. Basically he and his super-intelligent kid partner Jim have a business where they'll do anything for money but when they take a job for a mysterious woman named Rachel Sweet they suddenly find themselves chased by pirates.

Long story short, it's a tale of space pirates, a galactic treasure, and a legendary ship powered by an unusual android girl. The crew of said ship - the titular Outlaw Star - is Gene (who's, ironically, afraid of outer space), Jim, a catgirl named Aisha Clanclan, a contract assassin named "Twilight" Suzuka, and the android girl, whose name is Melfina. Their life consists of trying to get to the treasure before the pirates do, while also trying to make money to maintain the ship and pay back the guy who repaired their ship early in the series.

Space Battleship Yamato / Starblazers

Space Battleship Yamato. Either the original classic series or the amazing reboot Space Battleship Yamato 2199. Also known as Starblazers in the US.

Outlaw Star might be a good suggestion too. Great classic space-based sci-fi.

This is a tough one. Space Opera is a good choice. Also, Moretsu Pirates would be in that genre, however with comedy and a bit of fan service. I would also throw in there, purely for comical reasons, Princess Jellyfish as it does have a great scene in the intro of the main characters dressed up as Star Wars characters.

Sailor Moon

The new Sailor Moon anime, Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal!
Sailor Moon is also big with space and family themes. Toei Animation, PNP

I think Cowboy Bebop is the most obvious choice. It is definitely an anime classic, and it is defined as a space opera. Of course, the animation is not the newest thing ever, so for those who want a nice crisp anime with a similar plot, try Space Dandy. It just finished airing on Adult Swim. Although it is more of a 'fanservicey' show, the elements of visiting different planets, seeing different species of aliens are very similar to Star Wars.

Now, take all of the space out of Star Wars and it's still a very awesome movie franchise. A great story, strong characters, and that soundtrack is so identifiable. There are so many anime titles that share these concepts as well. First that comes to my mind is actually Sailor Moon. Although Usagi isn't the strongest gal in the cosmos, when she is fighting for love - she will do anything she must to do what's right. There are also definitely themes of space in this show too! The main characters are technically aliens! The characters are strong, determined, it has an underlying good story, with very memorable music, and I would recommend this anime to everyone who likes those things.

Cowboy Bebop

Cowboy Bebop is probably the easiest to start with. My dad is a huge Star Wars and Star Trek fan, but I knew he wouldn't want to commit to sitting through a whole series, so I just had him watch the Cowboy Bebop movie (which can be followed without having watched any episodes beforehand). He pretty much enjoyed the whole thing and asked to watch more!
