Posh to the extreme, Dior's bold shadows are rich, silky and made with such intense pigments, they seem to last forever. You'll love how they go on like velvet. Wear each shade alone, or combine two, three or all five shades.

Urban Decay Eyeshadow

Urban Decay as a brand has become so popular it knocked off MAC my list for the first time in years. These individual shadows run about $18 each (a few dollars more than MAC) and come in 68 decadent shades (Urban Decay's verbiage, not mine, but I do agree). They go on silky and smooth, tend not to clump and I love the shimmery jeweled tones.

Shimmery, metallic eyeshadow is a great bet for parties, evenings out or any special event and Stila makes a fan favorite. The foil finish will last all night. If you don't like a heavy coverage, use the primer first to smooth out the color. It comes in 12 colors, and my favorite is "kitten."

Since they hit the market a few years ago, Urban Decay's "Naked" and "Naked 2" palettes have risen to the top of the "Best of" lists. Urban Decay is a beloved brand — they don't test on animals and they require as much as possible vegan ingredients from their sources.

This palette contains 12 full-sized eyeshadows in both matte and shimmery finishes, but what's brilliant about these shades are they flatter every eye color. They tend to be on the warmer side, so they don't flatter "cool" skin tones as well and some of the shadows go on very sheer, rather than the dense pigmented color I love (see Dior above), but at about $50 for 12 shadows, you can't beat the value. Paired with Urban Decay's primer, these shadows will stay on all day.

Not everyone is going to need 141 pieces of makeup, but if you are huge makeup aficionado you cannot beat this price. One of e.l.f.'s bestsellers, this 141-piece collection includes a whopping 84 eyeshadow shades, 36 lip gloss shades, 6 blush shades and much more for less than $50.

Everyone needs a great neutral palette and this is the THE one to buy, according to the beauty buzz on Reddit. People are going crazy over this particular palette which offers up so many wonderful combinations of neutrals you won't run out of shadow or options for years.

For women worried about putting unhealthy cosmetics on their skin, mineral eyeshadows are the way to go. There are may great organic, natural eyeshadows on the market today, but a good go-to bet is Alima Pure. They're not too expensive, they're highly pigmented and you can apply them wet or dry.

This is the best drugstore eyeshadow for a smoky eye. Apply with a special eyeshadow brush and smudge with your finger on the lid and below the bottom lid. Under $10 at drugstores and even cheaper online.

Don't want to splurge on $15 shadows? You can get great eye shadows in your grocery store. Revlon palettes are rich, glide on smoothly and have a staying power you won't see in other basic grocery store and drugstore brands.

Runner up: L'Oreal Wear Infinite Duos.

An Amazon.com bestseller, Maybelline's "The Nudes" palette is absolutely perfect for blue, green and blue eyes. Create smokey eyes or use a basic mid-range color for day.

The secret to shadow that stays on all-night long: Cream shadows. We wear this under our shimmery powder shadows and the shadow never cakes in the creases (caused by oils). I love the color Stilife.

Runner up: Laura Mercier Metallic Crème Eye Colour

No shadow is sexier than the shimmery, glimmery shades. Glittery shadows have been been popular for years and show no signs of going away. We like this palette from Shany because it gets fantastic reviews on Amazon.com and is super affordable. But you'll notice this glimmer is mainly for smokey eyes.

Almost every beauty brand has shimmery shadows. Whether you go for creams or powder, you'll love the incandescent glows these cast.

Pink shades are hot for spring and summer and compliment every skin shade. Our favorite is Clarins Soft Cream Eye Colour in Sugar Pink.

This taupe eyeshadow actually makes eyes pop, which is great on mornings when you need to look more awake than you feel. You can use it as a cheek highlighter as well. This blush is an Allure Magazine Readers' Choice Award winner.
