The Top Bob Hairstyles for Older Women

Bob hairstyles are a chic choice on older women because they tend to look good on all face shapes. The following photos show older celebrities with gorgeous and various types of bobs. Hopefully, they will inspire you in your choice of your next hairstyle.

As perfect as we all think they are, oval faces can be on the long side. If you have a long face, or an oval face that is long-ish, consider a sophisticated bob such as this one. The angles show off a strong jaw and long layers add some movement so the bob isn't too boxy or helmet-like. Long bangs will mask a high forehead. Ask for layers cut in at the eyes and cheeks.

Unless you have a taut jawline that isn't saggy, consider getting a bob that hits at least an inch below the chin. A bob that hits right at the jaw will emphasize any sagging.

A Gorgeous Long Bob

This woman has a round face shape, which isn't usually well-suited to bobs. A round face can look rounder with hair cut to the chin, encasing the head like a helmet. The better bob option for a round face is the long bob with long, side-swept bangs.

Why this style works:

  • Side-swept bangs add angles to otherwise soft features.
  • Lack of body. You don't want too add width to the sides of the head when you have a round face.
  • She has a long neck. Women with short necks need length to elongate their necks. You don't want a bob to hit right at the jaw when you have a short, thick neck.

So, who can wear a bob hairstyle? Anyone with a nice jawline and neck will look good in a bob.

Here are some tips to consider before getting your hair cut:

  • Consider your personality. If you are classic and clean and consider yourself to be sophisticated, a bob may be for you.
  • Your lifestyle is important. Bobs usually require a blow dryer and sometimes a flat iron to achieve this sleek look. If you don't pay much attention to your hair, consider if you'll be able to maintain your bob, including the trims you'll need every six weeks (unless you're growing your hair out).

A Wavy Bob

Every face shape and even hair texture can wear a bob; it's largely dependent on the specific type of bob. Here are a few things to consider:

  • If you have a round face, a long bob is your best option.
  • When it comes to hair texture, bobs work best on thin to medium hair.
  • If you have curly hair, a bob will turn into a triangle on you, unless you get layers cut in and the ends texturized (see photos of short, curly hairstyles that are adorable). This photo shows off thick wavy hair that's cut short and looks fabulous.
  • If you have fine hair, ask your stylist for a "graduated bob," which is stacked layers cut shorter in the back, longer in the front that give hair needed body and height at the crown.
  • You may need a great flat iron to keep your bob in phenomenal shape.

This long bob is mussy. To get a mussy bob, spray in a beach salt spray and scrunch hair as it dries.

To blow dry this cut into a sleek bob, follow these directions and get these items:

1. A volumizing shampoo and mousse if you have fine hair.
2. A large, paddle brush. Don't use a rounded brush on this cut, because you don't want the ends to curl under.
3. A decent flat iron. (You can wear this look wavy, too).
4. A gloss spray for after you iron, which you can buy it from Amazon.

Salon owner Rodney Cutler tells MSN's Glo the best youthful, edgy and confident bob these days is the bob cut in the A-line style, as "Real Housewife of Beverly Hills" Yolanda Foster's is cut here.

A-line means the back is slightly shorter than the front, with an angle that can be seen from the side. The A-line is also called "graduated bobs" or "inverted bob hairstyles" and work nicely because they give hair movement, according to Cutler in Glamour magazine.

To get this look, you'll want to blow dry your hair with a round brush. First, spritz a volumizing spray and massage the product in hair. Then, blow dry hair in sections.

Here's a great bob with side-swept bangs, which are flattering to every face shape. Blow dry your bangs pointing the nozzle of your dryer downward from the top of your head. Brush bangs to the left, right and down the center as you dry.

The long bob remains one of the most popular bob versions today. The long bob tends to be a bit longer than the classic bob (it should be at least 1-2 inches below the chin), and works on all face shapes and with all hair textures.

You can change up the look of your bob by letting it dry naturally some days, other days blow-drying it straight. You can curl it so it has waves. Here, this bob is blow dried straight and sleek and likely flat-ironed, but this cut would look great air dried, too.

To get this look, "ask that it be slightly shorter in the back with very subtle layering throughout," says stylist Chris McMillan in Allure Magazine.

According to McMillan, this is a cut that works best on straight hair. You can add bangs to this look. Blunt ones would be gorgeous. If you have a slightly round face, ask for longer, side-swept bangs.
