Could you get away with this trendy hairstyle?

The pixie hairstyles that have been cropping up on black women are absolutely stunning. No matter your natural hair texture, whether thick, kinky, curly, chemically straightened or wavy, a pixie can be a gorgeous choice as you'll see in this photo gallery. It's also a good choice for women who prefer weaves or even wigs. Yes, wigs are hot, hot, hot as you'll see in this gallery.

And it's a popular choice. The pixie is on my Hottest Short Hairstyle Trends, it also made my list of The Year's Hottest Hairstyles.

How you'll look in a pixie matters largely on your face shape, your body type, and your personality.

Your Face Shape

Your face shape matters with a pixie because you want to create the illusion that you have a perfect oval face.

  • The pixie works best on women with heart-shaped, square and oval faces.
  • The pixie is a good option for women with round faces, just make sure to keep the bangs long and style them forward or up to create the illusion of length.

Your Body Shape

Your body shape can matter to your haircut particularly if you are tall, petite, curvy or busty. For example, a super tall woman with no curves could look like a pinhead with a pixie hairstyle. And a woman who's very curvy needs to balance out those curves with some body in her hair. Sometimes a pixie won't cut it. If you have huge boobs and wonderful hips, you may consider a hairstyle with more volume to it. It's all about balance.

Your Personality

Your lifestyle and personality matter in your haircut. A pixie can be low-maintenance, which is great if you are. Not all pixies are low-maintenance, especially those with bangs that must be kept straight.

As for personality and the pixie, there's something about a gorgeous pixie that commands attention. You can't hide behind your hair, after all. So consider if a pixie fits your personality and your lifestyle.

Your Hair Texture

While I absolutely love natural black hair cut into a pixie, some of the hottest pixies today have long straight bangs or even pompadours. These are not out of your reach. The pixies you admire on Caucasian women are achievable for black women, too, thanks to relaxers, weaves, and irons. So don't discount photo galleries of white women with pixies.

The Right Products

If you get a pixie, you'll need a new bevy of products for your hair. A flat-iron that's small enough to iron your hair is a must, as are heat protectant sprays and a molding paste. I give you the full run-down in The Best Hair Products for Pixie Hairstyles.

Halle Berry

I saw a poll where voters overwhelmingly named this cut their favorite Halle Berry hairstyle. It turns out it's her favorite hairstyle on herself, according to a 2012 interview with the Huffington Post. In the interview, Berry says:

I am my best self when I have super short hair. That’s when I feel most like me and most confidant.

I’ve had long hair until I was about 18 or 19, when I first started acting. I would go to auditions and see every other girl in the room with long, curly hair -- whether it be natural or weaved in. I remember thinking this isn’t working for me. I have to somehow be different from these girls, so I cut all my hair off. I went to my manager’s office and he almost had a heart attack. He said, "You’re never going to work. You are no longer commercial." And I said, "That’s exactly it. I look like every other girl and they’re never going to notice me." Two weeks after I did that, I got my first acting job.

Berry also said that growing up as a black woman "I felt that if I didn’t have long hair, I wasn’t going to be beautiful. I always thought that. Cutting my hair was freeing."

And I have to say: I prefer Berry in a pixie. Always have.

Jennifer Hudson wore this gorgeous choppy pixie (I ADORE those bangs) for a year before shearing off all of her hair into a Grace Jones-inspired cap in August, 2015.

See how Hudson's (and Tyra Banks's!) stylist gave someone a gorgeous pixie without cutting her hair. The secret: a wig. Just call them your new favorite accessory.

Lisa Arrindell Anderson is an actress best known for her role in Madea's Family Reunion who, in 2001 after watching the twin towers go down in flames, never got a perm again. She's kept her hair natural ever since. Here, she wears her natural locks in a pixie, but she's worn her hair long as well.

Tamron Hall, the Today Show correspondent, has a gorgeous pixie which she usually blows dry and straightens every day with a relaxer and an iron. One day she went on the air with her natural hair. Find out what happened in this piece on the Today Show Website.

I love the tips on the site for caring for natural hair from Hall's stylist Johnny Wright (who also styles Michelle Obama's hair):

  • It's important to steam care dry, curly hair. This locks in moisture.
  • Wright recommends using a t-shirt instead of a towel to dry hair. It's better for reducing the chances of frizz.
  • Stick with sulfate-free shampoos formulated for natural hair.
  • Use a T-shirt instead of a towel to dry hair because it reduces frizz.
  •  The right products are key. Wright recommends aloe vera to strengthen hair, bamboo milk to lock in moisture and add shine and honey for softening hair and guarana root to prevent breakage.

Viola Davis

Viola Davis revealed in an interview with Vulture Magazine that she lost half of her hair to alopecia when she was 28. After that, she says she wore a wig everywhere:

"I wore a wig in the Jacuzzi. I had a wig I wore around the house. I had a wig that I wore to events. I had a wig that I wore when I worked out. I never showed my natural hair. It was a crutch, not an enhancement … I was so desperate for people to think that I was beautiful. I had to be liberated from that [feeling] to a certain extent."

At the 2012 Oscars, she left the wig at home and wore her hair natural. It was a breakthrough moment. She still wears her wigs, but not all the time and that, she said, is freeing.
