The Must-Have Products to Save your Hair this Winter

Cure the Winter Hair Blues

It doesn't take long into the cold, dry season of the year before your hair starts to misbehave. The problem with winter hair blues is that they can turn into irreversible damage by spring, leaving you no choice but to chop your hair off. Fly-a-ways, static, dry scalp, fizzy ends, and brittle hair are tell-tale signs that Jack Frost has been wreaking havoc on those delicate locks. Fear not, these are my absolute favorite products to control the winter hair beast and keep your hair healthy all season long.

The Dry Hair Cure All: Hair Oil

Smith Collection/ The Image Bank/ Getty Images

I really believe in using a great hair oil all year long (CHI Silk Infusion happens to reign as my favorite). If you're not using one, now is the time to invest in one for a fast answer to nearly every winter hair issue. Put in in your hair before you blow dry and you've got added moisture, increased shine, and beautiful manageability. Smooth just a dab onto your hair when it's dry and those fly-a-ways are suddenly gone. Plus, hair oil will actually help strengthen your hair over time, and improve the look of dry brittle hair and help prevent split ends.

Pro tip: hair oils can do double duty for your skin. Most hair oils make a great skin treatment for dry spots and can revitalize dry nail cuticles. I often mix a couple of drops of my favorite hair oil into my regular facial moisturizer when my skin is ultra dry.

Get a Hydrating Shampoo

Taking care of dry winter hair starts in the shower. A great hydrating shampoo infuses moisture into your hair in the very place that you start to strip your natural moisture away. When switching to a hydrating shampoo, try using a hydrating formula every-other shampoo and increase as necessary until you get the results you desire. Some of my favorite hydrating shampoos include:

  • CHI Argan Oil Shampoo
  • Redken Diamond Oil Shampoo
  • Organix Tea Tree Mint Shampoo

Pro tip: you can add hydration to the shampoo you already have. Mix a little hair oil into your regular shampoo by mixing them together in the palm of your hand before applying to your hair.

Stop Washing Your Hair: Dry Shampoo

One of the best cures for the winter hair blues is to not wash your hair as often. As a recovered daily shampooer myself, I can tell you that not shampooing my hair is honestly the best decision I've made for healthier hair with more moisture (and I'm not talking about grease). You can get more days out of your shampoo by using a dry shampoo on the days that you feel a little oily. Try one of my favorite dry shampoos for a perfect way to revive and restore your second or third day hair with out looking like you just rolled out of bed.

Pro tip: use a dry shampoo for added volume on freshly washed hair days as well.

Get the Right Moisture in your Conditioner

During the winter is incredibly important to find an everyday conditioner that will add moisture without being too heavy on your hair. Redken's Clear Moisture collection is a great everyday moisture solution. I'm also a big fan of Nexxus Hydra Light for moisture that won't weigh your hair down. If those are too light to condition your drier hair during the winter months, go heavier with a product like CHI Argan Oil Conditioner, Joico Moisture Recovery Conditioner, or Aussie Moist Conditioner.

Pro tip: if you're skipping the conditioner you're setting yourself up for split ends, especially during the winter.

Intense Moisture Hair Masks/Treatments

A heavy deep conditioning moisturizing treatment is great way to keep you hair healthy and free from the damaging effects of winter. I recommend a deep conditioner, like Pureology's Hydra Cure, at least two to four times per month during the driest months of the year. A deep penetrating moisturizing treatment will add moisture like no other regular conditioner can deliver. Browse through my favorite deep conditioners to find the right deep conditioning treatment for your hair, and if you're looking for an organic option, try coconut oil.

Pro tip: get salon quality results by applying your deep conditioner with these tips.

No matter what the season, if you're using heat on your hair, a thermal protect product is an absolute must have to prevent brittle, broken, and split ends that can be caused from the high temperatures of hot tools. 12 Benefits products and Sexy Hair 450 Protect are my all time favorite for heat protection that goes above and beyond in the winter. In particular, the blow-dry sprays are ultra moisturizing and leave hair super soft. Spray on wet hair before blow drying, or use the blow-dry spray on dry hair before using a flat iron or curling iron and you'll guard your hair from heat related damage, static, and the harsh elements of winter.
