Dave Kotinsky for Getty If you find yourself attracted to the short, edgy hairstyles that Black women have made popular in recent years, you're not alone. Edgy, funky cuts and colors are on trend at the moment. This slideshow pulls together some of the best edgy cuts on Black women today. You'll see pompadours, spiked cuts, shaved hair, bright colors and much more. But before you head to the salon for your own edgy short cut, keep in mind that you have to be able to pull off such a 'do. Edgy, short hairstyles command attention. You can't hide behind your hair with these cuts. While Black women rock the styles featured in this gallery, you don't have to be African American to sport the hairdos that follow. Women of all races can wear these short styles. However, some short styles do work better on people with coarse, textured hair. Also, bear in mind that short styles require a lot of maintenance. If you decide to go through with the big chop, you'll likely have to visit the salon every four to six weeks for a trim. Does your schedule or, better yet, your pocketbook allow for that? Have you ever had short hair? If so, what do you remember about your previous experience with a short style? If you didn't maintain the look or hated how your facial features looked with short hair, maybe you should think twice before cutting your hair short again. On the other hand, many people who've never worn their hair short before say it was a welcome change for them to try a short hairstyle. If you cut your hair short and hate it, there are options. You could wear extensions, a weave or a wig until your locks grow back. You could also try wearing a short wig before you chop off your mane to allow you to get a feel for what you'd look like with short hair. There are also some computerized programs you could use to see what you would look like with short hair. Such precautions are helpful since a haircut is a major commitment. After you look through this slideshow, you may be convinced that short hair is the best look for you. In fact, your hair may already be short but you're in need of a cut, color or style that will make your hairdo edgier. Revising your look can give you a sense of newfound confidence and prevent you from using your long hair as a crutch. Embrace your face and personal style by trying one of the looks in this photo gallery. 02 of 27 Vanessa Williams Vanessa Williams. Frederick M. Brown 03 of 27 Tichina Arnold Tichina Arnold.
