Gwyneth Is a Classic Square Face

Gwyneth looks best in flat-ironed long locks, such as these. The curtain effect of her hair–which she gets because she parts it in the middle, then flat-irons it–hides the sharp edges of her jaw while playing up her amazing cheekbones.

Just after the birth of her son, Moses, Paltrow cut off her long hair which grew down to her breasts and was too long–a fact she freely admitted. She tried a long bob for a while but is now happy with a long cut that ends below her collarbone. Note how she parts her hair straight down the middle, making what could be a boring look very modern. If you go with this look, make sure to cut in just a few long layers for movement.

Keira Knightley's Perfect Long Bob

Long bobs are great on a square face, as long as they are soft and layered. Avoid a sharp, blunt bob that hits right at your chin; it will only accentuate your jaw, creating a boxy effect.

The long bob is perfect for someone who has Keira's square face. You can see how this cut elongates her face yet is still very edgy. Here's a tip I love to share: ask your stylist to cut your bob shorter in the back, keeping hair longer in the front.

Shoulder-Length Cuts Are Flattering on Square Faces

Kate Moss square face shape

Shoulder-length hair is flattering on all face shapes, but as you can see here on Kate Moss, this particular cut is especially nice on a square face shape. The light waves help soften Moss's sharp, angular jawline and the middle part (common on many square-faced actresses and models) works very nicely with this look.

A Bad Hairstyle for a Square Face: The Severe Ponytail

When all the hair is pulled back from the face, as shown here on actress Gwyneth Paltrow (who has a classic square face), the squareness is very apparent. If you have sharp, angular features, a severe ponytail or bun highlights that feature. If you like that, great. But this look is a typical "don't" for square faces. And yes, I know what you're thinking: Gwyneth is beautiful and looks good with almost any hairstyle, but she is all angles here (and you can't see her dress).

See softer ponytail options in this gallery of classic ponytails.

A Bad Haircut for a Square Face: Blunt Bangs and One-Length Bobs

Bad hair, square face shapes
Christina Ricci.

Many square-faced women want to play down their strong, angular jaw. Here, Christina Ricci's one-length bob would be harsh on a woman with a square face. The blunt-cut bangs paired with the bob that hits right at the chin would make a square face appear even more square. So what's a better look for a square face? A longer bob and side-swept bangs.

Consider yourself lucky. You share having a square face with celebs like Demi Moore, Mandy Moore, Keira Knightley, and Rosario Dawson.

Here, Mandy Moore shows off a very flattering hairstyle that compliments her square face. The long layers start just below her chin and her hair ends at her shoulders.

Rosario, a classic square-faced beauty, shows off her collarbone cut with waves. This look adds softness to her strong jawline. If you have any natural waves or curls, consider the natural look–it will soften your angular features.

Your Part Matters

Lucky you, you can get away with a middle part, which is super youthful and trendy at the moment. Had Gwyneth parted her hair on the side, it would have made her face appear rounder.

Long layers will always complement a square face. Long layers are especially great paired with side-swept bangs. This look on Maria Shriver (a classic square) is perfect: her layers begin at the jawline and continue downward.

Paulina Porizkova's Long, Natural Waves

Paulina Porizkova has a classic square face and her long hair works on her face shape because the soft waves (likely her natural hair texture) soften the harshness of her angular jawline. Long hair is very flattering on a square face, but if you saw my previous tip you'll be sure to cut in some long layers to add more softness to the front.

Soften a Square Face With an Updo

Curly hair or waves soften the angles on a square face. Here's a great example of the perfect updo on a square face. Actress Minnie Driver has naturally super curly hair, but she often straightens it. Here her updo works beautifully because it's soft, wavy, and frames her face.

Jacqueline Onassis' Soft Waves

Who doesn't want to look like Jackie Onassis? The waves shown here on Jackie soften her jawline. This look can be achieved by curling hair.

If you have curly hair, try to keep the length below the jawline. Curly hair tends to frizz up when too short and a longer cut weighs down the curls so they don't look poofy. Texture in the form or curls (or choppy ends) is a great look for square faces.

Wavy Hair

Waves (just like curls) can soften angular features, as evidenced here on Jessica Biel, another classic square face. If you have super straight hair, try spritzing it with a styling spray and winding 2-inch sections around the barrel of a curling iron. Next, finger-comb out and finish with holding spray.

The pixie cut is gorgeous on petite women with small features. But this look would only highlight your angular features, making your face appear too harsh.

Layers Around the Face Soften a Harsh Jaw

Bad and Good Hairstyles for a Square Face

The hairstyle on the left (Kate Bosworth) is perfect for a square face because curls will soften a strong jaw.

Make sure the ends aren't cut straight across (long layers are preferred), otherwise you could be left with a triangular look that's unbecoming to square faces. Consider a side part, rather than a middle part, which also softens angular features.

The hairstyle on the right is too sharp for a square face. In fact, it only makes the angles more angular.

Evan Rachel Wood's Funky Short Cut

This is a lovely cut on Evan Rachel Wood who has a naturally square face shape. This cut would also work for someone with a long face. If you have a round face and covet this hairstyle, you're also in luck, it would work on your face shape, too.

Avoid this cut if you have a heart-shaped face which usually comes with a pointy chin. Long bangs that hits right at the chin will only draw attention to your pointy chin.

If you are thinking of going short and like this cut, you're in luck because it works well on anyone. You can see how flattering it is on Yolanda Foster's square face.

Before you cut off all your hair, keep in mind that short hair has to be trimmed every four to six weeks if you want to maintain your style.

Jennifer Garner's Long Wavy Hair With Side-Swept Bangs

If you have a square face, you have angular features. Your jaw is almost as wide as your cheekbones, and if you were to draw a diagram of your face, it would resemble a square.

Because your goal is to soften your hard angles, the best bangs for you are long, side-swept bangs that graze the brows. They should hit just below the brow but be longer on the sides, like these bangs on Jennifer Garner, a natural square face.

The key to your perfect bangs is to ensure that the bangs are tapered longer on the sides than they are above the brow. The hair above the brow should hit at the brow or just below it. The bangs can be wispy, allowing some of your forehead to peek through.

These Pinterest Bangs Are Awesome

The look of long hair with thick, full fringe is a great, edgy, hip hairstyle that can take years off your look.

It works great on square faces, with one caveat: the sides of the fringe must be longer than the middle of the fringe. If you get the typical blunt bangs, your face risks appearing even more angular. The longer edges soften a square face.

One suggestion for finding your ideal hairstyle is to keep eyeing celebrities who share your face shape. These celebs have multiple people cutting and coiffing their hair and always have the best look for their face shape.

Yes, You Can Go Edgy

Screenshot-2014-12-18-23.44.25.png

I am giving you permission to push the envelope. Here's a fun edgy haircut that looks great on a square face shape. Edgy cuts are very hot right now.

The Pompadour Is Uber Edgy

This pompadour hairstyle looks great on Kelly Osbourne, who has a square face. The hair adds lift on top and lengthens the face.

This cut is more about attitude than your face shape. This cut works best on coarse, thick hair. Fine hair will just fall flat without the help of a ton of styling product. I can't stress enough the need to find a good stylist. A good stylist is adept at funky hairstyles and knows to follow the shape of your head rather than just your face shape when cutting a short, edgy style.

Bedhead Hair

freja-beha-erichsen.jpg

Bedhead is hot, hot, hot and it's all about texture. It's the casual look gone haywire. Some stylists use the dry-cutting technique to achieve the perfect look because it allows them to see where the cowlicks are and how hair naturally falls.
