Puffy eyes and dark circles under the eyes are a very common beauty issue for most people. There are a number of ways to help care for the delicate skin around the eyes and one of the simplest, and most affordable methods are with tea bags.

Common Reasons for Puffy Eyes and Dark Circles

There are a few common culprits for puffy eyes and dark circles around the eyes. Lack of sleep is one of the most common reasons.

"Beauty sleep" is not a myth, but an essential to looking (and feeling) healthy. Practice good sleep hygiene to help improve how you look and feel each morning. Allergies, both environmental and food-based, can also cause puffy eyes and/or dark circles to appear. If puffiness is not constant, but trigger based, it can be helpful to determine what that allergy trigger is. Finally, a salt-heavy diet can lead to fluid retention, resulting in puffy eyes (and puffiness in other parts of your body).

What Tea to Use

Much like cucumber slices, cooled tea bags are a natural way to make an edible item into a natural beauty treatment. While many types of cooled tea bags will feel relaxing, the most effective are caffeinated teas. Caffeine is known to constrict the blood vessels under the skin and therefore, reduce the puffiness of the skin. Common teas with caffeine include breakfast teas, black tea, green tea and jasmine tea.

Tannins, another key ingredient of teas, provide the color and astringent flavor to the tea. Like caffeine, the astringency of the tannins helps to constrict the blood vessels and capillaries of the skin and reduce puffiness.

How to Use Tea Bags

You can enjoy drinking the tea and then reuse the tea bag as a natural treatment for puffy eyes and dark circles under the eyes.

If you bask in beauty rituals, your skin will likely benefit from a weekly treatment, so set a weekly date and stick to it. Do note, if you are making this an evening routine, you may want to avoid drinking caffeinated tea late in the evening. Here's how to use teabags for natural skincare:

  1. Select a tea that is high in caffeine and tannins, such as a black tea.
  2. Steep the tea as directed. Enjoy.
  3. Cool the tea bag in the fridge or freezer, inside a covered bowl or a sealed plastic container. If you are only using one tea bag, repeat the process.
  4. When you have two chilled tea bags, you're ready for an eye treatment. Remove the tea bags from the fridge, then immediately lay back and place one tea bag over each eye. (The cooler the tea bags are, the more effective they will be.)
  5. Make sure you cover the dark circles around your eyes completely with the tea bags. Press them down gently to ensure that they have contact with the skin.
  6. Keep your head tilted back and your eyes closed. (This is easier to do if you are lying down away from bright lights and distractions and could even work in a relaxing bath.) Leave the tea bags on your eyes for ten minutes or more.
  7. Repeat as desired. For best results, use tea bags on your eyes at least once a week.
