You may think of the denim maxi skirt as a casual, bohemian item. As pictured here, though, it can be easily styled to look chic for city wear, when you layer on a Chanel-inspired tweed jacket, black accessories and delicate jewelry.

City Chic Denim Skirt Outfit

Here's a stylish denim skirt outfit you could wear to work — and out for drinks afterward. Look how chic this button-front denim skirt from the Alexa Chung for AG Jeans collection is, when paired with a bow blouse. I'm inspired by the addition of high-quality, colorful leather accessories, which brighten the entire outfit and make it look pulled-together. This is a great example of a transitional outfit you can adapt to wear across the seasons, too. For cooler months, wear sheer tights — a trend re-ignited in modern times by everyone's favorite fashionable royal, Kate Middleton — and a long overcoat, as pictured here.

Denim That Flatters a Curvy Shape

Most curvy women know that wearing lighter colors on top, and darker ones on the bottom, can help minimize a bigger bottom half. If you're an hourglass shape with an ample chest and hips, it's also essential to define your waistline, which highlights your body's slenderest area. Here's a great example of this in action, in this outfit of a light-wash chambray shirt by Topshop, paired with a darker colored A-line skirt by the brand. The high waist on this skirt also gives the illusion of an even tinier waistline. I also love the fun that's added to this outfit through the choice of a bag and shoes in unexpected hues.

The Midi-Length Denim Skirt

The midi-length denim skirt is very stylish right now. You can see how this new length instantly adds fashion to a simple denim skirt outfit with a cable-knit sweater and ankle boots. A primary colored purse is fun for weekends but you could switch it for a serious, black leather tote and look ready for casual days at work in these pieces.

Try a Skirt Instead of Jeans

Sometimes, style is just about doing something slightly unexpected. Here's how to tweak your usual casual-day outfit of jeans and a sweatshirt, to make it look a bit more pulled together. An easy jean skirt in a just-past-the-knee length is surprisingly right with a dark sweatshirt and boyfriend jacket, with a high-quality envelope tote adding fashion. Loafers, sneakers or ankle boots give this look a boyish vibe that suits this day-off ensemble.

Nothing says effortless style like a denim cut-off mini-skirt. For a breezy outfit you can wear shopping, sight-seeing and out to lunch, pair a short jean skirt with a light-weight cotton or linen button-up tunic. Wear the top untucked for a cool, long-over-short look and personalize the outfit with your favorite accessories.

Sharply cut, dark wash denim has become the fabric of choice for designers wanting to make a new style statement. Here, a Michael Kors denim outfit is personalized with a trendy army-green spring coat and socks under sandals. Swap the shoes for a pair of black high heel pumps and you could easily wear this outfit almost anywhere except (for most of us) work.
