Stew is a former writer for The Balance Careers covering military topics. He graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1991, after which he pursued his SEAL training and spent about 8 years in the SEAL Teams. He is also an instructor at the Naval Academy, having finished his career as the SEAL mentor/recruiter at the Naval Academy.
After his time in the Navy, Stew Smith was involved in technical writing for security consulting firms, but eventually moved to writing full-time as a self-employed freelance writer on the topic of Tactical Fitness, which concerns the physical training of military, special ops, law enforcement, and fire fighting professionals.
Stew is on the editorial staff of the Tactical Strength and Conditioning Journal operated by the National Strength and Conditioning Association. He also speaks at a Tactical Strength and Conditioning conferences.
Stew earned a B.S. in Political Science / Russian Language from U.S. Naval Academy, was a Class Leader for SEAL training/U.S. Basic Underwater Demolition, and earned his certification as a Strength and Conditioning Specialist from the National Strength and Conditioning Association.
