Although most of the world uses only the letters A to G for musical note names, in Germany, Scandinavia, and a few other places, it is common to use H to mean B natural and B for B flat. This practice grew out of the 10th-century custom of using separate noteheads for B flat (round) and B natural (square). By J. S. Bach’s time, the shapes had become replaced with the B and H note shapes and then simply the note names, used with what we now consider to be the standard shapes. Bach and many of his fans (including Harold Schoenberg, Alfred Schnittke, Robert Schumann, and some composers whose last names don’t begin with S) famously took advantage of the B/H naming distinction, sneaking the “Bach motif” (Bb A C B-natural) into various compositions. American musicians typically don’t follow this B/H practice, in casual parlance, except when engaging in similar musical/wordplay. So, here's a list of words you can spell solely with note names (including H), including a handful of proper nouns and even a couple of abbreviations. a aa AA aah aahed ab aba abaca abb abba ABBA abbe Abe abed accede acceded ace aced ach ache ached ad adage add ae aff ag aga age aged agee agha ah aha ahead ba baa baaed baba babe bac bacca Bach bach bacha bached bad bade badge badged baff baffed bag bagged bah BBC be Bea beach beached bead beaded bed bedded bedhead bee beech beef beefed beg begged begad behead cab cabbed cabbage cabbaged cabbed caca cache cached cad cade cadge cadged cafe caff cage caged cede ceded cee cha-cha cha-cha-cha chad chafe chafed chaff chaffed chebec Cheech chef da dab dabbed dace dacha dad dada da-dah dae daff daffed dag dah de dead deaf deb debag decade decaf dee deed Dee-Dee deeded def deface defaced each ebb ebbed ecce eche eched Ed edge edged edh eee eech ef eff efface effaced effed egad egg egghead eh fa faa fab facade face faced fad fade faded fadge fadged fag fah fe fed fee feeb feed feedbag feh gab gabba gabbed gad gae gaed gaff gaffe gaffed gag gagged ged gee geed ghee ha haaf had hade haded hae haed hag hah ha-ha he head headache headed hebe hedge hedged heed heeded Featured Video
