Summer is all about baring skin and showing off that beautiful (faux, we hope!) summer tan. But in order to have great looking skin to show off, you need to take a few summer-specific measures.

Follow these tips for glowing summer skin and you'll be ready to pull out your favorite summer dress or bikini in no time.

Exfoliate Your Body

This one skin care step is the key to smooth skin.  Your body sheds skin cells at an amazing rate every minute of every day. If you don't get rid of them, they'll just sit on the very top layer of your skin, which makes your skin look dull and feel dry. No matter how much lotion you use, you're never going to have glowing skin if you don't exfoliate.

Grab a body scrub and hit the shower. Gently rub your exfoliator in circular movements over your entire body from the shoulders down (you'll want a separate facial exfoliator for your face and neck) and rinse clean. Continue to do this two to three times a week for year-round beautiful skin. Just be sure to apply moisturizer right after getting out of the shower.

We recommend checking out Alba Botanica's Hawaiian Sea Salt Body Scrub. It's a great-smelling scrub and is made with natural sea salt and tropical nut oils that will leave your skin feeling soft and smooth. You might even be able to skip the moisturizer after using this product.

Shave the Right Way

During winter, what's the point of keeping your legs religiously shaved daily when you know they'll never see the light of day? Those lazy days of winter are over. Find a good razor that won't cause razor burn like Gillette Embrace Razor.

When picking out a shaving cream, don't choose the $1.00 men's cream. Instead, reach for a high-quality shaving lotion that will hydrate while preventing nicks and cuts, like Aveeno's Therapeutic Shave Gel.

In a pinch, your hair conditioner can actually function as a pretty good shaving cream instead.

Hydrate your Body with a Summer-Scented Lotion

It's time to pack away your thick winter body butters and use light summery lotions instead. During summer, you don't have time to wait for your lotion to sink in, so you want to look for something light and fast-absorbing. Gels and spray moisturizers are pretty perfect in this regard.

We love to break out the coconut or mango scented lotion for summer. Nothing says summer more than a light, refreshing, fruity-smelling lotion. Make sure you apply your moisturizer right after you dry off from your shower. This way you seal in the moisture from the shower. We recommend the Kiss My Face Moisturizing Spray Lotion Tropical Coconut Oil Moisturizer because it's lightweight and fast absorbing.

Get a Safe Summer Glow

You have so many choices when it comes to adding a little summer tint to your skin, but using a tanning bed shouldn't be one of those choices. Using a sunless tanner will give your skin a beautiful glow to start the summer without the risk of skin cancer.

Even if you're not a fan of sunless tanners all over your body, you can easily use them just on your face. If you alternate your regular facial moisturizer with a facial moisturizer that builds a bit of color, you'll have a healthy glow that will make it look as though you just spent the weekend on the beach. Most facial tanners build color gradually, and by alternating with your regular moisturizer with one that gives your skin a tint, your skin will effortlessly maintain a natural-looking glow throughout the summer.

Don't Forget Your Feet

It's sandal season, which means it's time to step your toe game up. Either get a pedicure (try a beauty school if cost is a factor) or give yourself an at-home treatment. Scrub off the dead dry skin from heels. Keep a foot scrub and file in your shower and use it on your feet a few times a week. You'll notice a big difference in softness.

We recommend trying the Bliss Foot Patrol foot scrub because it uses AHA acids to exfoliate and also moisturizes to give you super soft feet.

Buy a New Sunscreen

Throw away last year's unused sunscreen and buy a new bottle. Sunscreens aren't meant to last forever, and seeing as most people don't use as much as they should you probably have a bottle or two stored away somewhere in your home. Be safe and invest in a new one.

And don't forget the most important sunscreen advice: use it. You should be applying a shot glass size of sunscreen on your entire body and a full teaspoon on your face and neck. Reapply every one to two hours while in the sun to ensure safe summer fun.

One of our favorite sunscreens is Neutrogena's SPF 70 CoolDry Sport Sunscreen Lotion because it is super lightweight and not sticky at all. You don't even feel like you have sunscreen on your skin after applying this product.
