You can find a lot well meaning skin care advice that tells you exactly how to care for your skin. Yet not all of the skin care "rules" you read are correct.  There are definitely skin care rules that you can and should break.

If You Have Oily Skin You Shouldn't Moisturize Or Use Facial Oils

If you have oily skin it can sometimes be quite confusing to know which products to use on your skin. You do not want to clog your pores accidentally or cause breakouts by using the wrong products.

But if you use products that are supposed to clear up blackheads and help slow down the flow of sebum (oil) in your pores, then you also run the risk of drying your skin out. When this happens many people with oily skin fear using moisturizer or facial oil to balance their skin.

Even if you have oily skin you can use a moisturizer or facial oil. As a matter of fact, you really should be using a moisturizer if you have oily skin. Why? All skin needs hydration in order to be healthy. Oily skin can still be dehydrated (lacking water) and for that reason you may need to use a moisturizer regularly.

If you have oily skin look for a gel moisturizer like Clean & Clear Morning Burst Hydrating Gel Moisturizer or Garnier SkinActive Moisture Rescue Refreshing Gel-Cream. You could also use jojoba oil on your skin to hydrate and balance your skin. Jojoba oil won't clog your pores and is quickly absorbed into the skin, so there is no greasy feeling left on your face.

Toner Is An Essential Skin Care Product

Ever heard that you need to "cleanse, tone, and moisturize" your skin twice a day? Well, you exactly do not have to tone your skin twice a day or even at all! Toner is a skin care product that is definitely not a must.

It used to be that facial cleansers dried out the skin and caused the pH of the skin to rise, which is something you actually don't want for healthy skin.

The solution that was offered to combat this issue was to use a toner right after cleansing. Today's facial cleansers do not dry out our skin, so using a toner right after cleansing definitely is not a skin care must. Some people feel that they need a toner after cleansing if they wear a lot of make-up; by using a toner after cleansing in the evening they can make sure they have removed all traces of their make-up. This is one way to use toner. You also can simply do a double cleanse in the evening to ensure that you remove all your make-up.

Do you even need a toner? That depends — today's toners soothe and hydrate the skin or alternately get rid of excess oil. People with very dry or dehydrated skin can definitely use a toner in their daily skin care routine in order to easily and lightly hydrate their skin before applying other products. Try The Body Shop Vitamin E Hydrating Toner or Paula's Choice Moisture Boost Essential Hydrating Toner for Normal to Dry Skin. If you have easily irritated skin a toner is a great product to add your skin care routine in order to calm your skin. Try Avalon Organics Brilliant Balance with Lavender & Prebiotics Hydrating Toner or Simple Kind to Skin Facial Toner.

Lastly, people with extremely oily skin will want to use a toner to get rid of oil that sits on their skin before they apply any other skin care product. Just be sure you are not using a product that strips your skin of all its oils or has drying ingredients in it. Try Thayers Rose Petal Witch Hazel with Aloe Vera or Neutrogena Alcohol-Free Toner.

Scrub Your Face

If you want beautiful, smooth, and well hydrated skin, you actually need to baby your skin. Scrubbing your skin, washing your skin in hot water, or using harsh products will actually hurt your skin instead of helping it. When you treat your skin aggressively you actually strip it of oils and the hydration that it needs to stay healthy.  While your skin may temporarily feel smooth after you scrub it, pretty soon it will feel tight and dry.

You definitely need to exfoliate your skin regularly, but instead of using harsh scrubs we suggest using facial acids instead. Keep your skin looking great by treating it with kid gloves.
