Choosing to marry someone is probably one of the most important decisions you'll ever make in your life. And in a perfect world, your marriage will be long-lasting, you'll remain deeply in love with your partner, and you'll live happily ever after in your very own fairy tale. But how do you know if you're on the path toward marital bliss or a marital mistake? Before you run to the altar, there are five key signs that can help you answer the million-dollar question: "should I get married?"

1. You Want to Marry This Person

When you're trying to figure out if you're ready to get married, it's important to be honest with yourself and make sure that you truly want to marry this person. If you're feeling pressured by your partner or your family to get married, think that you have to take this step because you've been a couple for a certain period of time, or want to get married because you're sick of being the last one of your friends who hasn't tied the knot, you're actually setting yourself up for failure. You should be highly excited, thrilled, and invigorated by the thought of marrying your partner. And even if you're a little nervous about making this decision, you will know in your heart that you truly desire to be this person's husband or wife.

2. You Share the Same Values

If you're wondering if you should get married, it's imperative that you and your partner have shared goals and values.

If you both want the same things going forward, have similar priorities, and align about what you want for your future, then your marriage is far more likely to succeed. However, if you want to have kids one day but your partner doesn't, or if your dream is to move off the grid and live a secluded life while your partner is a true city person, the difference in your values is going to cause problems in the future.

When you marry someone, you have to make sure your priorities are aligned as much as possible.

3. You're Able to Disagree

Another important step before getting married is that you and your partner know how to handle arguments and disagreements with each other. When you're able to fight fair, resolve conflicts, and come out stronger as a couple, then you know that you're ready to handle the potential challenges of marriage and weather storms together. Since life is unpredictable and problems may pop up, it's important that you and your partner already have the tools in place needed to get through the tough times as a team. Being able to communicate with one another, whether you're agreeing or disagreeing, is an absolute must in any happy and healthy marriage.

4. You're Honest With One Another

When you're trying to determine if you should get married, you should make sure that you're able to be honest and open with one another. If you're hiding something from your partner or don't feel as though you can trust him or her, your marriage will be short and not so sweet. Trust is a key component in a successful, fulfilling, and long-lasting marriage, and if you still refuse to open up to your partner or your partner has betrayed your trust in the past, your future as a married couple is going to be rough.

When you deeply trust your partner and consider him or her to be your best friend and closest confidant, your marriage is more likely to succeed.

5. You Have Fun Together

If you're wondering if you should get married, it's important to make sure that you and your partner still have fun together. Being able to laugh together, go on adventures, and goof off around each other are vital components when it comes to a happy marriage. When you love spending time with this person, deeply care about him or her, and want to be around him or her as much as possible, this electricity and spark between the two of you is more likely to last, even after years of married life.
