There are well over 120 United States Army bases all over the world. Some in not so hospitable environments, and many in some of the most beautiful places in the world. From Colorado, to Germany, Japan, and Hawaii, as well as combat zones of Iraq, Afghanistan, and even Korea (still at war), there are Army towns supporting the world wide mission of protecting America's interests.

Fort Shafter and Schofield Barracks are commands within the US Army Garrison Hawaii. Other commands are Aliamanu Military Reservation/Fort DeRussy/Helemano Military Reservation/Pohakuloa Training Area/Wheeler Army Airfield.  U.S. Army Garrison-Hawaii provides quality services, installation facilities, training and recreation centers to nearly 90,000 Soldiers, civilians and family members.

Fort Shafter is situated among plantation-style homes and royal palm trees in south Oahu in the town of Kalihi. Fort Shafter has been home to the senior Army headquarters in Hawaii for nearly a century. 

Schofield Barracks is the largest Army post in Hawaii, located on an 18,000 acre site in central Oahu. Schofield Barracks is located at the foot of the Waianae mountain range. The installation is located a few miles from the towns of Wahiawa and Mililani. 

The mission of Fort Shafter and The 25th Infantry Division is to prepare for deployment to a theater of operations to perform combat operations as part of a corps counterattack. On order, it conducts theater-wide rapid deployment forces to perform combat operations in support of USCINCPAC theater strategy.

The Mission of US Army Garrison Hawaii is "Supporting each Warrior, Family and Community with sustainable services, ensuring power projection readiness from Hawaii."

Base Information

The Schofield Training Area is located on the eastern slope of the Waianae Mountain range on Oahu. It reaches eastward from the ride line to Kaukonahua Road. The upper portion of the training area lie within a Conservation District which extends to the northwest. Most of the district is used for growing pineapple.

Fort Shafter is the headquarters of the United States Army Pacific Command, the MACOM of U.S. Army forces in Asia and the Pacific Basin.  The Army Corps of Engineers Pacific Ocean Division is also on Fort Shafter.

The 25th Infantry Division has defended Hawaii since 1921. On December 7, 1941, the 25th Infantry Division received its debut of fire when Japanese forces attacked military facilities on the island of Oahu. The division rapidly deployed to southern and eastern coasts of the island, ready to defend against a possible Japanese invasion. The division was made famous after relieving the Marines at Guadalcanal in 1942. Their performance during this operation, the 25th Infantry Division (25th ID) earned its nickname "Tropic Lightning."

Jungle Operations Training Course is located on the island of Oahu and operated by the 25th Infantry Division Lightning Academy.  The school has a 30-40% attrition rate and pushes soldiers in constant wet, hot, tired, and hungry environments. This is the only jungle school in the Army.  The USMC has one in Okinawa.

Temporary Lodging

Temporary government quarters for Tripler Army Medical Center (TAMC), Fort Shafter and Camp Smith is offered by Tripler Lodging, located conveniently behind Tripler Medical Center. 

All guests that cannot be accommodated at Tripler are automatically referred to the Inn at Schofield Barracks. The Inn at Schofield Barracks is the official temporary lodging for all Army personnel on Oahu and is the only facility authorized to issue a statement of non-availability. For all personnel located in the Fort Shafter area or other areas on Oahu, the Tripler Billeting Facility should be the first choice of transient lodging. If space is not available there, the soldier must process through the Inn at Schofield Barracks to qualify for full per diem entitlements.

There is also a Distinguished Visitors Quarters available for 06 and above and CSM at Fort Shafter alongside the Nagorski Golf course and Hale Ikena.

Housing - Fort Shafter

All service members who have command sponsorship for their families are authorized to reside in Government quarters. The waiting times vary according to the supply versus demand for quarters at any given time. The time of year, rank and the number of bedrooms required will influence the wait time for housing. You could have no waiting at all or you may wait as long as 14 months. Accommodations can be found in a reasonable period of time and at acceptable prices.

The Housing Referral Office can provide you a list of rentals with corresponding locator maps and give you information regarding the communities in which the rentals are located.


There are no DODDS Schools in Hawaii.

The Army School Liaison Services is located in Bldg. 1283, Hewitt Avenue Schofield Barracks. For families staying in temporary lodging there are different schools that your child will attend depending upon which facility you are staying at. This will change when you are relocate to your permanent housing. You may contact the Hawaii Department of Education, Central District Office for more details. 

There are numerous opportunities for furthering your education in Hawaii. Tripler Army Education Center offers classes to further your degree or area of interest or Leadership classes. In addition, Ft. Shafter and Schofield Barracks are the other Army Education Centers. 

Child Care

The Child Development Centers are operated by the Directorate of Community Activities, Child and Youth Services. They provide full day, part day, and hourly services to meet the needs of the soldiers and families. Full Day care is available for children 6 weeks to 5 years of age, Part Day care is available for children 18 months to 5 years and Hourly Care is available for children 6 weeks to 12 years of age.

Medical Care

Tripler Army Medical Center is the largest military treatment facility in the Pacific area. Tripler also administers and supervises affiliation programs with accredited universities, to include the University of Hawaii in numerous clinical specialties. The medical facility has a major teaching center and fellowship programs.

Tripler AMC operates the US Army Health Clinic at Schofield Barracks, which provides quality healthcare to the majority of the 35,000 soldiers, family members and retirees. Schofield's Health Clinic provides more than 50 percent of all Army primary health care in Hawaii.

Schofield Barracks Dental Clinic provides routine dental care to all active duty Army soldiers assigned to Schofield Barracks and to other active duty military service members assigned for duty at Schofield Barracks.

Tripler Army Dental Clinic provides routine dental care to all active duty Army soldiers assigned to eastern Oahu and to other active duty military service members assigned for duty at Tripler Army Medical Center.
