It's Feeding Time

Blood Splatter Zombie Makeup

Did you just encounter a feeding frenzy? Let 'em know you hit an artery with some thin blood spattered all over the chin and neck area.

  •  Thin Splatter Blood Recipe

To apply, get some of my tried-and-tested thin blood on a paintbrush. Flick the paintbrush at the chin/neck area, stopping the paintbrush handle abruptly with your other hand so that the blood goes flying.

The Face Blowout

To create an absolute gaping hole in your face, you'll need to work up some latex flaps.

  • Paint a circle of liquid latex on a ceramic plate.
  • Brush the inside edge of the circle an inch or so toward the center, gradually thinning the liquid latex. Let dry.
  • Add another layer to the circle, then brush inward again.
  • When your punched-out circle is dry, carefully peel it from the plate.
  • Apply the latex piece to your face with spirit gum.
  • Roll thin strips of paper towel and tuck them up under the flaps to make the stick up. Wet these with fake blood and spirit glue into place if necessary.
  • Coat paper towels in makeup as you color your new face hole in red.
  • Use extra bits of paper towel as gore in the wound.
  • Blend the outside edges of the latex piece to your skin tone with concealer and bruise colors like purple, red, and yellow.

Burn Holes

Zombie makeup - burn holes
Zombie makeup - burn holes. Rain Blanken

Burn holes are a nasty addition that can easily look real.  Here's how:

  • Apply a thin layer of liquid latex. Let dry
  • Pinch up the center of the dried latex, pulling it up away from the skin, making a small bubble in the latex.
  • Poke the latex you've pulled up with a toothpick to make a hole. Use the toothpick and your fingers to open up the hole as much as desired. You can also use nail scissors, here.
  • Roll up small pieces of toilet paper and line the inside of the wound to give it some dimension and gross white details.
  • Apply black makeup up to the skin where the latex is open.
  • Apply red makeup inside, then add it around the opening of the wound.
  • Add red and purple bruising to the edges of the wound to blend the liquid latex with your skin tone.
  • Lightly apply ashes or baby powder to finish.

Bonus points if you have a cigarette that you can stick in there with spirit gum.

Ashes to Ashes

Zombie Makeup Tricks
Ashes to Ashes. Rain Blanken

Get that 'just crawled out from under the office rubble' look by using some fire pit ashes.

  • Dab your face with the usual white-and-gray combo to give your face that undead look
  • Go outside.
  • Burn a few pieces of a paper on a ceramic or metal plate to work up some fresh ashes, or head directly to your fire pit.
  • Apply the ashes while your face is still wet with makeup.
  • Be careful not to get this in your eyes... apply ashes liberally to your costume!

If you're going as the ashy, dirty zombie, be a good friend and bring a towel to sit on in the car.

Slit Wrist Makeup

To create a slit wrist:

  • Apply a layer of liquid latex to your wrist and let dry.
  • Catch the middle of the latex and cut across with nail scissors.
  • Let's go ahead and say it... be careful. Don't cut your wrist for real, here.
  • Peel the latex back to expose your skin. Add black makeup, then red.
  • Soak small bits of rolled toilet paper in fake blood. Use spirit gum to adhere the pieces to the bloody wrist slits.
  • Add concealer to the edges of the latex, blending with your skin tone.
  • Blot with fake blood, or drip thick blood from the wounds.

Puncture Wound

Puncture Wound
Puncture wound. Rain Blanken

This puncture wound looks real. Real gross.

  • Apply a thin circle of liquid latex to the skin. Let dry until tacky.
  • Add a smaller circle of liquid latex to the middle, letting it blend with the first. Let dry until tacky.
  • Add a thick dab of liquid latex to the middle.
  • Hollow out the liquid latex dab with a toothpick as it dries.
  • Hit the wound with a hair dryer as you spread the puncture hole.
  • Let the latex wrinkle or pucker in places around the hole. It'll only look more disgusting. Mine has a cut under the hole, too. Just push around the latex as you like.
  • Paint the inside of the hole with black makeup. Add black to the edges of the hole.
  • Pat the edges of your wound with yellow, purple, and red bruising to blend the liquid latex with your skin.
  • Add a dollop of blood and let ooze as desired.

Burn Wound

Burn Holes:

  • Apply a thin layer of liquid latex to the skin. Let dry.
  • Add smaller layer  of liquid latex on top. Let dry.
  • Pinch up a bit of the dried latex to create a small bubble under the surface.
  • Poke the latex with a toothpick and tear it open.
  • Make holes of varying sizes.

Bubbles:

  • Pinch up a bit of latex to create a bubble, but do not poke it open.
  • Take the cotton off of a q-tip and carefully stuff it in one of the holes toward your new bubble.
  • Stuff the cotton in bit-by-bit so that your bubble doesn't 'burst'
  • Push the cotton wad under the bit of latex you've pulled up.
  • Stuff the bubble until it reaches the desired swelling.

Charred Skin:

  • Add red makeup to holes.
  • Char the skin by applying a layer of black, then red, then blot gently with black again
  • Add ashes to complete the effect.

Zipper Face Makeup

Zipper Face Makeup. Photo by: soul stealer

I'm not sure how exactly this would happen to a zombie, but this kind of wound has become very popular over the past few years with ready-made kits. If you're using a real zipper, however, you'll have the best looking zipper face in town.

  • Harvest a zipper from an old jacket. Cut it free, use a seam ripper to remove the excess fabric, and use pliers to cut away the extra zipper.
  • Apply the zipper to your face with spirit gum. Spirit gum will make anything stick to your face. Let the spirit gum dry for 10 seconds to get tacky, then stick it to your face.
  • Add highly contrasting makeup to the inside/outside of the zippered area. Lots of blood and gore inside, a pale, clean look on the outside.

Zombie Eyes

zombie-contact-lenses.jpg
Zombie Contact Lenses. Photo by Calzas

One way to really make your zombie look pop is with a set of startling peepers. These are so distracting that your friends will have trouble chatting about the party dip while looking you in the eyes.

Zombie Contact Lens Tips:

  • I suggest white-out contacts, or those that are white with a black rim. Other popular horror colors are red and large black contacts that cover even the whites of your eyes.
  •  Put in your contacts first. You're about to have lots of fake blood and latex on your hands.
  • If you don't normally wear contacts and have trouble getting these in your eyes, try holding down the lower lip and sliding the contact down into the bottom of your eye first, then slide it up... like you're parallel-parking the contact in your eye.
  • Take care of your costume contacts. Replenish the solution to keep them from drying out, and don't wear them beyond the expiration date.

Rotten Teeth Makeup

rotten-teeth-makeup.png
Rotten teeth makeup. Rain Blanken

In addition to zombie contact lenses, this is an effect that will really set off your costume. Tooth rot makeup can be found at most any costume shop that carries FX makeup like liquid latex and spirit gum.

I use Ben Nye brand, which offers various colors including 'decay', 'nicotine', 'zombie rot' and 'black'. For realism, I suggest skipping the 'zombie rot' and using either 'black' or 'decay'.

To apply rotten teeth makeup:

  • Dry the front of your teeth with a paper towel.
  • Keep your lips peeled back.
  • Blot the tooth rot on with a cotton swab.
  • Keep your lips peeled back and breathe through your teeth quickly to help dry the tooth rot.
  • The bottles of tooth rot are small, so keep it on your for reapplication during the night.
  • Tooth rot will last all night if you're not eating, but be sure to reapply after munching party snacks.
