Purple Toning Shampoos to Try

Kick the yellow brassy tones to the curb

If your hair is highlighted, your hair stylist may have recommended that you try a purple toning shampoo to keep your highlights bright? Purple toning shampoo helps keep highlights or colored hair from turning yellow or brassy. It works by depositing purple pigment onto highlighted hair. The purple pigment tones out the yellow or brassiness leaving your hair a more desired neutral tone.

It's important to note that purple toning shampoos shouldn't be used daily or even with every shampoo. Only use a purple toning shampoo 3-4 times per month, or when you notice that your hair is starting to get brassy. Overuse of purple toning shampoo can result in blue, purple, or gray highlights. Although, these days that just might be your thing.

Shampoos with high levels of pigment are great for medium blonde to black hair, while lighter pigmented shampoos are better for medium blonde to platinum blonde hair. If a shampoo has too much pigment for hair color, I like to cut it with a traditional shampoo using a 50/50 ratio.

Pro tip: use a highly pigmented purple shampoo on brown and black hair to increase shine and depth. Also great for gray (#grannyhair) or white hair that loses its luster. It's not just for blonde hair.

Here's a list of purple toning shampoos that come highly recommended.

Pravana Pure Light Brightening Shampoo is one of my favorite purple toning shampoos. The smell is awesome and the pigment is bold. In fact, I often recommend mixing this shampoo with your favorite traditional shampoo if the pigment is too strong.

Biosilk Color Therapy Cool Blonde Shampoo is my second favorite purple toning shampoo. The pigment isn't as intense as Pravana, so the toning effect is more gentle and is better for very light blonde hair. The sulfate and paraben free formula leaves your hair feeling amazing.

SACHAJUAN’s Silver Shampoo is one of the most luxurious brands of purple toning shampoo that I've found. The pigments add volume and new luster to hair while counteracting and neutralizing yellow/golden unwanted tones in light to medium colored hair.

JOICO Color Endure Violet Shampoo ranks super high on my list of favorite purple tonight shampoos. The smell is beautiful and the pigment is a perfect medium between the Biosilk and Pravana. JOICO is notorious for leaving hair feeling soft and hydrated after use, and this product lives up to that reputation.

Clairol Shimmer Lights Conditioning Shampoo is an old standby favorite purple toning shampoo. It works well and is readily available at any Sally Beauty Supply. Priced at under $10, the value is great. It's a little harsher than some of the others recommended, but a consumer favorite, none-the-less.

John Frieda Sheer Blonde Color Renew Tone Restoring Shampoo is another value-packed purple toning shampoo that gives brassiness the boot. Most people find this product to work in less than three shampoos, and another product that comes in at less than $10, it's worth a try.

Schwarzkopf Bonacure Color Save Silver Shampoo is another highly pigmented purple toning shampoo that only takes a few seconds of contact to tone out unwanted brassy tones.

Unite Blonda Shampoo has been a long time favorite toning shampoo for all hair types. The pigment is perfect for gray and blonde hair that gets brassy.
