Tonya Harding is perhaps the most controversial person in figure skating history.

Just before the 1994 Olympics, right after a practice session at the United States National Figure Skating Championships in Detroit, Michigan, Nancy Kerrigan was attacked and hit hard with a hard object on her knee. The accident made it impossible for her to compete and Tonya Harding won the Championship Ladies event.

Shortly after that, it was alleged that Tonya Harding might have been part of the conspiracy to hurt Nancy. Tonya was banned from U.S. Figure Skating for life.

Sean saved his mother's life by diving into the water after she fainted when part of her leg was cut off at impact. Mirai Nagasu - 2008 U.S. National Ladies Champion and 2010 Olympic Team Member

Mirai Nagasu is the 2008 United States Ladies National Figure Skating Champion.

In 2008, Nagasu surprised the ice skating world by winning the short program in the Senior Ladies event at the U.S. National Figure Skating Championships. She earned 70.23 points, the highest-ever score for a ladies' short program at any U.S. National Figure Skating event. In 2010, she qualified for the U.S. Olympic Figure Skating Team.  She won bronze at the 2014 U.S. National Figure Skating Championships, but was not selected to be part of Team USA at the 2014 Sochi Olympics.  That decision caused some controversy.

Jeremy Abbott took Evan Lysacek's place at the 2008 World Figure Skating Championships after Lysacek withdrew due to injury.

The 2007 and 2008 U.S. Figure Skating Champion, Evan Lysacek fell just before the 2008 World Figure Skating Championships. His blade broke as he attempted a triple Axel. He hurt his forearm, elbow and shoulder. Nothing was broken, but he couldn't compete in Worlds. Jeremy Abbott, who placed fourth at the 2008 Nationals, was chosen to replace Lysacek.

Melissa Gregory and Denis Petukhov - Olympic Ice Dancers

In 2002, Melissa Gregory and Denis Petukhov finished third in the U.S. Nationals. Then, for the next three years, the couple finished second in the same event. Their second-place finish in the 2006 Nationals earned them a trip to the Olympics in Torino.

Melissa found Denis via the internet. When they first began skating together, he could not speak English and she could not speak Russian. Not only did they become skating partners, but they fell in love! They were married in 2001.

Mr. Frick - Legendary Ice Skating Show Comedian

For years, Werner Groebli, known as Mr. Frick, delighted figure skating fans all over the world. He was praised for his grace on the ice, for his comic timing, and for his off-balance acrobatics. He toured with in Shipstads and Johnson Ice Follies beginning in the late 1930s and entertained figure skating audiences until 1981.

In 2008, the ice dance team of Alexandra Zaretski and Roman Zaretski made U.S. national news. The skaters and their coach, former Olympian Galit Chait, filed a discrimination case against an ice arena in New Jersey. A lawsuit was filed against certain employees from the arena. Apparently, some of the rink’s coaches advised Chait, not to teach the Israelis. Then, one day, in September of 2008, the skaters arrived at the rink and were told they were not allowed on the ice.

Jeremy Abbott - World and International Figure Skating Competitor

Jeremy Abbott won the Pewter Medal at the U.S. National Figure Skating Championships in 2007 and 2008. He went on to win a bronze medal at the 2007 Four Continents Championships and he won gold at the Cup of China Grand Prix of Figure Skating Competition in 2008. He is considered one of the top male figure skaters in the United States.

World and Olympic Figure Skating Coaches Ron Ludington and Doreen Denny

Ron Ludington won a bronze medal in pair skating at the 1960 Olympics. He competed and medaled in the United States National Figure Skating Championships in all three branches of figure skating. He has coached many national and international level pair and ice dance competitors and is considered one of the most successful pair and ice dance coaches in North America.

Doreen Denny is a two-time world ice dancing champion and was the coach of 1976 Olympic Bronze Ice Dance Medalists Colleen O'Connor and Jim Millns.

Tai Babilonia and Jack Courtney - January 2, 2009

1975 and 1976 U.S. National Pairs Bronze Medalist, Jack Courtney, was a champion roller skater before he switched to ice. What is remarkable about Courtney's record is, that in 1968, he won roller worlds in BOTH single and pair skating. He also won the U.S. Senior men's title in singles in roller skating five times and the national senior pair title was won by Courtney and his partner Sheryl Trueman Courtney four times. Jack Courtney is considered a legend in the roller skating world.

In early 2009, ice skating legend, Tai Babilonia, took a special trip to Colorado Springs especially to mentor 2008 U.S. pair skating champions, Keauna McLaughlin and Rockne Brubaker. During a break from her mentoring tasks, she took the time to reunite with Jack Courtney. Babilonia recalled that some of the pair skating lifts done by Tai Babilonia and Randy Gardner were invented by Jack Courtney. Here, the two "skating greats" pose together.

Elaine Zayak was the first female figure skater to land many triple jumps in her skating programs. At the 1982 World Figure Skating Championships, she won the title because she landed six triple jumps in her long program.

The informally known "Zayak Rule," was created because of Elaine Zayak. The rule states that a competitor may not repeat a triple jump more than twice, and after the first triple jump is performed, repeated triple jumps must be done in combination or in a sequence.

Two-time Olympic Pair Skating Champion and Six-Time World Pair Skating Champion, Aleksandr Zaitsev, lives in Moscow, but visited the U.S. during the summer on 2009. On Friday, May 29, 2009, a party was given in his honor. During the party, he did a death spiral with 1981 World Pair Skating Champion Irina Vorobieva. Vorobieva lives and coaches skating in the United States. Zaitsev won gold with another Irina, Irina Rodnina.

Ice skater, Nicole Bobek, won the 1995 U.S. Figure Skating Championship and also was ranked third in the world that year. She competed in the 1998 Winter Olympics. She was known for her infectious and happy personality. This personality was famous on and off the ice.

In 2009, Bobek was arrested on drug charges. She was charged with being part of a drug ring. It is said that Nicole Bobek may face up to ten years in prison if convicted.
