15 Eyeshadows That Are Good for You & the Environment

I have a confession to make: it took me weeks to pull together this list of the best natural eyeshadows because I only wanted to feature natural, organic eyeshadows that were both good for you AND the environment. Once I found those, I had to sift out the ones that tested on animals and those that got poor reviews because we all know how annoying to spend money on eyeshadow only to apply it and realize that it hardly shows up on your lid.

I have my reputation to protect. I really only want to tell you about the best stuff. The tried and true.

What I learned about natural eyeshadows is this: mineral makeup is king. Mineral makeup is largely made up of purely natural ingredients including titanium oxide, zinc oxides, iron oxides and mica. Unlike non-organic shadows which contain very few naturally occurring ingredients and a lot of preservatives that aren't good for you, mineral makeup has been around for hundreds of years and is safe and good for you and the environment.

This list also includes wonderful eyeshadow primers and a wonderful illuminator (use it to wake up eyes).

I have a pot of Alima mineral eyeshadow that I use every day. These eyeshadows are a favorite because there are so many color options that range from matte to shimmer and the price is right at only $12.50. I love that they tend to be richly pigmented so the color is rich, not "barely there." And these shadows are free of Bismuth oxychloride (BOC), another big plus for natural, organic makeup lovers.

I absolutely love the color options available in Everyday Minerals Eyeshadows. And at $4.99, you can't beat the price. These eyeshadows have great staying power if applied wet (just dip your brush in a bit of water before dipping it into the shadow) and over an eyeshadow primer.

Zuii Organic's eyeshadows get rave reviews from's former makeup guide, Faith Lawless. Faith writes that Zuii is one of the best natural brands on the market today for eyeshadow. Their shadows are highly pigmented and there are many amazing colors to choose from. Faith loves Moss (deep green), Black Diamond (very black with subtle sparkles), Blackberry (deep purple), Blue Marine (beautiful medium royal blue), Brownie (dark gold), Mustard (medium tan with slight yellow and shine), and White Diamond (sparkly white).

As with all mineral shadows, you should apply with an eyeshadow brush and apply a primer on lids beforehand.

One of the most popular eyeshadow palettes on the market, Urban Decay's Naked is well-priced considering you get so many shadows in the palette. There's also a Naked 2, which has some similar shades but a lot of new ones, too.

About the company: Although Urban Decay is not your average "natural, organic" beauty brand, it is a cruelty free brand committed to ending animal testing. No products are test on animals and the company requires their suppliers certify that the raw materials were not tested on animals. Urban Decay is certified by both PETA and The Leaping Bunny Program (CCIC) as cruelty-free.

Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion ($9)

I swear by Urban Decay's primer potion and it's a beauty editor favorite. Most mineral eyeshadows require a primer on your lid to make them stay longer and this is an excellent option.
If you have oily lids, you may have noticed your eyeshadow melts into your crease. Keep this from happening with a lid primer, like this one from Jane Iredale. This lid primer doubles as a shadow best applied with a finger.
Mineral makeup usually requires a good mineral makeup brush for application. These brushes from Everyday Minerals get great reviews and are loved for their price.
The must-have addition to any natural makeup collection, this no-glitter luminizer is the perfect highlighting balm for the inner corner of the eyes, under the eyebrows, along the collarbone, or anywhere else you want a subtle, sexy glow.
