Learn about our Editorial Process Updated on 09/15/18 The Stanley Cup, given to the National Hockey League champions at the end of each season, is the oldest professional athletics prize in North America. It's named the Stanley Cup because it was donated by Sir Frederick Arthur Stanley, Lord Stanley of Preston, in 1892 to be given to the champion hockey team in Canada. The Montreal Amateur Athletic Association was the first club to win the Stanley Cup, in 1893. The National Hockey League has been the owner of the Stanley Cup since 1910, and since 1926 only NHL teams could compete for the greatest prize in professional hockey. Some might think it fitting (or predictable) that the Montreal Canadiens have won the Stanley Cup more than any other team—23 times since the formation of the National Hockey League. Unlike every other professional sport, every championship team player gets his name inscribed on the Stanley Cup, and then each player and team staff member get to keep the trophy in his possession for 24 hours, which is also a tradition unique to the NHL. This list of hockey winners is divided into two sets of winners, with all Cup wins from 1918 to 2017 in the NHL and championship teams from 1893 to 1917 listed as "Pre-NHL" Winners." NHL Winners Montreal Canadiens: 23(The Canadiens also have one pre-NHL win, listed below)1924, 1930, 1931, 1944, 1946, 1953, 1956, 1957, 1958, 1959, 1960, 1965, 1966, 1968, 1969, 1971, 1973, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1986, 1993 Toronto Maple Leafs: 13(Includes wins under previous franchise names: Toronto Arenas and Toronto St. Pats)1918, 1922, 1932, 1942, 1945, 1947, 1948, 1949, 1951, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1967 Detroit Red Wings: 111936, 1937, 1943, 1950, 1952, 1954, 1955, 1997, 1998, 2002, 2008 Boston Bruins: 61929, 1939, 1941, 1970, 1972, 2011 Chicago Blackhawks: 61934, 1938, 1961, 2010, 2013, 2015 Edmonton Oilers: 51984, 1985, 1987, 1988, 1990 Pittsburgh Penguins: 51991, 1992, 2009, 2016, 2017 New York Rangers: 41928, 1933, 1940, 1994 New York Islanders: 41980, 1981, 1982, 1983 Ottawa Senators: 4(The Senators also have six pre-NHL wins, listed below.)1920, 1921, 1923, 1927 New Jersey Devils: 31995, 2000, 2003 Colorado Avalanche: 21996, 2001 Philadelphia Flyers: 21974, 1975 Montreal Maroons: 21926, 1935 Los Angeles Kings: 22012, 2014 Anaheim Ducks: 12007 Carolina Hurricanes: 12006 Tampa Bay Lightning: 12004 Dallas Stars: 11999 Calgary Flames: 11989 Victoria Cougars: 11925 Pre-NHL Winners In its early days, the Stanley Cup was open to challenges and not the property of any single league.
