Mark Edward Nero is a former writer for ThoughtCo where he wrote about rhythm and blues and soul music. He has been a professional journalist since 1995 and a music critic since 1996. Nero is a longtime R&B fan and an amateur musician who plays guitar, piano, and harmonica. He interviewed dozens of recording artists, including R. Kelly, Babyface, Donell Jones, Mya, Brian McKnight, and Raheem DeVaughn.
Nero is an expert on the soul, gospel, and the rhythm and blues music genres. Many books, research, and media articles quote his work for ThoughtCo. He appeared on several documentaries and an episode of the television series Unsung (A. Smith and Company Productions, 2013) as a guest expert. Nero continues to write for numerous publications, both within and outside the U.S., though not exclusive about music.
Mark Edward Nero received a Bachelor Arts (B.A.) in Communication and Media Studies from San Diego State University–California State University in 2000. He also holds an Associate Arts (A.A.) in Journalism and completed a program in Photojournalism.
