Not Too Long, Not Too Short, And Perfectly Wavy

Ahn Co Tran on Pinterest

Love, wavy hair is always on my "top trends" lists. In fact, it's a classic look that never goes out of style.

Most of us have hair with at least a little bit of wave in it, so these styles are achievable whether you have fine, flat hair, curly hair or frizzy hair. The difference, of course, would be in the styling. Products are key. The tools you use, too. And if you are really lucky and were born with naturally wavy hair, you might achieve these looks with just the right haircut.

In this gallery, I feature some of the most gorgeous long, wavy hairstyles today. Use it as inspiration for your own haircut, blow out or Pinterest board.

I absolutely love this hairstyle. To get signature Ahn Co Tran beachy waves, air dry hair for as long as possibly, then curl hair with a large-barreled curling iron. For detailed instruction, don't miss my article on how to get beachy waves

To get this look, you'll need the following:

How to Get Barely There Waves

Erin Heatherton. Tasos Katopodis // Getty Images

To get these barely-there waves, it's important to only create a few curls around the head. Too many and you'll end up with way more curls than in this picture. Follow these directions:

  • Wash hair, spritz with volumizing spray (see my list here).
  • Blowdry hair straight, scrunching as you go to add body. You can also comb hair straight and let hair airdry.
  • Once hair is completely dry, take a large, 2-inch or 1 1/2-inch barrel curling iron and wrap a 2-inch thick section of hair around the barrel. Hold for 8 seconds and then release.
  • Follow with only 4-5 more sections of hair. Curl in the opposite direction of the previous curl. This will help make waves look more natural.
  • Let waves cool, then finger comb them into place.
  • Finish with a spritz of hairspray.

How to Play Up Your Natural Waves

Azita Ghanizada. Kevork Djansezian // Getty Images

Most of us have some natural waves in our hair. To play up your natural waves, follow these instructions:

  • Wash hair, spritz with volumizing spray (see my list here).
  • Let hair air dry, scrunching hair into the palms of hands as hair dries. You can also wind and secure towel-dried hair into a loose bun to get the same effects.
  • Once hair is dry, you can wrap a few sections a large, 2-inch or 1 1/2-inch barrel curling iron to play up more waves. Be sure to leave the ends out so it looks more natural (don't clamp in the hair, simply wrap it around the barrel).
  • For a mussy look, bend over at the waist with your head down and give hair a good shake.
  • Finish with a spritz of hairspray.

Super Long Hippie Hair

Lauren Conrad. Jason Merritt // Getty

My best friend's 16-year-old daughter Rosemary (see her here) is a model and wears her hair super long, like almost down to her waist. Personally, I think it's too long, but Rosemary rolls my eyes at this and tells me all the high school girls are wearing their hair this long these days.

I give in. Check out Lauren Conrad's fabulous hippy hair here with just a bit of wave to it. That's exactly the look Rosemary and her friends covet.

How to Get Beachy Waves

These beachy waves are the result of having long, naturally wavy hair, going swimming in an ocean and then letting hair airdry while suntanning on the beach.

It's that beachy look everyone's after. You can get it yourself following these directions in The Secret to Beachy, Wavy Hair.

Long, Wavy Hair With a Few Extensions

By: Dave Hogan // Getty Images

Actress Rachel Weisz has insanely gorgeous lush waves here, but if you look closely, it's not all hers. Her stylist added about 3 inches of length to her naturally wavy hair with extensions. Also, if you look at other photos of her taken on this day, you can see her hair is shorter.

You can easily add clip-on extensions to your natural hair. To get this look, Weisz smooths her crown before sculpting the ends.
