Lisa Maloney

  • A hiker with nearly two decades of experience on the trails of Alaska and elsewhere
  • Experienced freelance writer and editor
  • Contributes articles to the outdoors section of newspapers and magazines
  • Wrote or co-wrote several books about hiking in Alaska

Lisa Maloney is a former writer for ThoughtCo who wrote about hiking and hiking-related topics for three years. Lisa can usually be found scrambling her way up the peaks of the Chugach Range, the mountains which ring her adopted hometown of Anchorage, Alaska. As an avid hiker, she has taken formal workshops in wilderness survival, bear safety, and avalanche hazard evaluation. However, she looks at her time on the hiking trails to be the most effective learning tool of all.

As a freelance writer and editor, Lisa regularly contributes articles to the outdoors section of Alaska's largest newspaper, The Alaska Dispatch News, and to magazines like Via, Backpacker, Natural Home and Gardens, The Writer, Last Frontier, Alaska, Breathe, and Coast. She is a member of the Alaska Press Club, Editorial Freelancers Association, and Outdoor Writers Association of America. Her latest book, Day Hiking Southcentral Alaska (Mountaineers Books), is available for purchase in April 2019.

Lisa Maloney studied Mathematics at the University of Alaska in Anchorage.
