To date, the Argentinean has netted 17 goals and it is surely only a matter of time before he surpasses Alfredo Di Stefano’s record of 18 in the fixture. Here is a look at Messi’s goals against Real. 01 of 11 March 10, 2007 (Primera Liga: Barcelona 3-3 Real Madrid) Three goals Alex Livesey/Getty Images Messi opened his El Clásico account in spectacular fashion with a hat-trick against Real at Camp Nou. He latched onto a Samuel Eto’o pass to cancel out Ruud van Nistelrooy’s opener and then lashed home another from close range after Ronaldinho had seen his shot pushed out by Iker Casillas. Messi’s third equalizer came in the 88th minute when he showed great composure to control a Ronaldinho pass, outpace the Madrid defense and fire across Casillas into the corner. 02 of 11 December 13, 2008 (Primera Liga: Barcelona 2-0 Real Madrid) One goal The Argentine put the icing on the cake at Camp Nou with his team’s second goal in injury time. As Real pressed desperately for an equalizer, Barca broke clear and Thierry Henry slid the ball across to Messi who dinked his shot over Casillas and into the net. Pepe stretched to keep out the shot but crashed into the post. Samuel Eto’o had given Barca the lead a few minutes earlier. 03 of 11 May 2, 2009 (Primera Liga: Real Madrid 2-6 Barcelona) Two goals This was a precession for the Catalans and one of Madrid’s worst humiliations. Messi capitalized on a defensive howler to put Barca 3-1 up and played a neat one-two with Xavi to make it 5-2 in the second-half. Real had gone a goal up could not live with Messi, Henry and Co as Barca eased towards the Primera Liga title. 04 of 11 April 10, 2010 (Primera Liga: Real Madrid 0-2 Barcelona) One goal Messi’s opener after 33 minutes edged Barca closer to another title. The Rosario-born youngster ran on to a beautifully clipped ball over the defense from Xavi, chested it beyond Raul Albiol and dispatched clinically past Casillas. Pedro scored another in the second-half as Real tasted defeat at home against their bitter rivals. 05 of 11 April 16, 2011 (Primera Liga: Real Madrid 1-1 Barcelona) One goal Messi lashed home his first penalty in the fixture after David villa had been felled in the penalty area. Cristiano Ronaldo equalized with a spot kick of his own, but the Merengues were again second best that season as Barca wrapped up another title. 06 of 11 April 27, 2011 (Champions League: Real Madrid 0-2 Barcelona) Two goals Two second-half goals in the semi-final first-leg at the Bernabeu effectively put the tie beyond Real at the halfway stage. Ibrahim Afellay skinned Marcelo before setting up Messi for a close range finish and the Argentine added a second when he left the Madrid defenders trailing in his wake before finishing low past Casillas. A sublime individual goal. 07 of 11 August 14, 2011 (Super Cup: Real Madrid 2-2 Barcelona) One goal Messi capitalized on some hesitation in the Merengues defense to send his side in 2-1 up at the break. He took the ball past Pepe and evaded a desperate challenge from Marcelo before comfortably beating Casillas with a low left-footed finish to add to Villa’s stunning opener. 08 of 11 August 17, 2011 (Super Cup: Barcelona 3-2 Real Madrid) Two goals Two more strikes in the return leg ensured that the first silverware of the 2011-12 season would go to Barca. He had already set up Andres Iniesta for the opener with a defense splitting through ball, before adding a second before half-time. Messi ran onto Gerard Pique’s flick and dinked the ball beyond Casillas. Karim Benzema leveled the tie on aggregate in the 82nd minute but Messi was not to be denied as he popped up with an 88th minute winner after playing a one-two with Adriano. 09 of 11 August 23, 2012 (Super Cup: Barcelona 3-2 Real Madrid) One goal Messi scored a 70th minute penalty in this match to put Barca 2-1 up and help them establish a 3-2 first leg lead in the Super Cup. Pedro and Xavi were also on target in another high scoring encounter between these two old foes. 10 of 11 August 29, 2012 (Super Cup: Real Madrid 2-1 Barcelona) One goal Jose Mourinho’s side stunned Barca with two goals in the first 20 minutes from Gonzalo Higuain and Cristiano Ronaldo. However, Messi hit back with a sumptuous free-kick before half-time. He curled the ball beyond the outstretched hands of Casillas to level the match on aggregate. It was one of Messi’s best free-kicks although not enough to bring home the Super Cup as Madrid triumphed on away goals. 11 of 11 October 7, 2012 (Primera Liga: Barcelona 2-2 Real Madrid) Two goals It had been 14 years since the first clásico of the Liga season had been played this early and it did not disappoint as Messi and Ronaldo continued the greatest rivalry in the modern game with two goals apiece. The Portuguese winger fired his side ahead with a low shot but Messi equalized from close-range to send Barca in level at half-time. Messi then beat Casillas with another beautifully placed free-kick for his 17th goal in the clásico, aged just 25. Ronaldo equalized again for Madrid as Mourinho’s side claimed a point at Camp Nou.
