Kristen Kovatch is a professional freelance writer and a lifelong horseback rider, trainer and competitor. She is currently training working cattle, roping and trail horses.
Kristen has essentially grown up in the saddle, working in disciplines from hunt seat equitation to western gaming. While attending Alfred University, she developed her skills specifically in western disciplines, working under nationally-recognized cow horse and roping competitors. Her intercollegiate competitive career culminated in two national qualifications as well as serving as team captain. She also competed with her own horses in team penning, team sorting and reined cow horse. Between semesters, Kristen traveled to Wyoming to a working cattle ranch where she started young horses, trained mature horses and moved cattle, as well as foster connections to the local rodeo circuits.
Kristen then worked for four years as the western teacher, trainer and coach at Alfred University, teaching western horsemanship from the beginner to the advanced level with a focus on rodeo events. She served as a mentor to college students, including regionally-ranked rodeo competitors as well as the 2013 Miss Rodeo New York.
Kristen now trains working cattle, roping and trail horses out of a private farm, spending part of her day in the saddle and part of her day writing.
Kristen graduated from Alfred University in 2010 with a degree in English literature and creative writing, as well as a minor in equestrian studies.
I'm excited to immerse readers in the complex and thrilling world of rodeo, from the results of the latest local or national events to the history and heritage of the rodeo lifestyle. Whether you are a rodeo competitor or a western enthusiast and fan, my goal is to inform, explain and illustrate the true cowboy way of life. As a self-proclaimed "horseback writer," I'm glad you're along for the ride!
