Experience

Kim Ruehl is a former writer for ThoughtCo, contributing stories for more than eight years, and is managing editor at NoDepression.com, a roots music journal. Her writing about folk and American roots music has appeared in Seattle's SoundNW, CityArts, and Seattle magazines, as well as Billboard and West Coast Performer and online at Folk Alley and NPR. Touring as a folk musician, she spent several years moving between music scenes, soaking up the musical styles native to various regions of the country, from Orlando to Seattle and many points in between. After several years as a singer-songwriter, she started writing about American folk and roots music in 2003. In 2010, she moved to Asheville, North Carolina, to research a book about Zilphia Horton, the musicologist credited with "We Shall Overcome," "This Little Light of Mine," and other anthems of empowerment.
