We love it as a stylish option for looking put together, for laid back weekends and casual occasions. You can even style double denim to look chic for more dressed up occasions — a trend that started on the street style blogs and has now migrated into many women's daily wardrobes. Wearing head to toe denim does take practice, though — there are some tricks which, if ignored, can make you look outdated, or like you just wandered in off the range. To help you avoid that fashion fate, here are our go-to fashion rules (and outfit ideas) for how to wear double denim now to create a modern, street style vibe. 01 of 09 Try a Slouchy Silhouette Edward Berthelot/Getty Images Want to look confident and up-to-date in double denim? For an easy, breezy look that telegraphs modern style, try wearing slouchy denim separates together, as pictured here. Play with different fits and fabric washes to put together an outfit that feels like it suits your personal fashion vibe. Not sure what goes with what? When in doubt, choose a lighter denim shirt to go with a darker wash jean or denim skirt. Or try wearing matching denim pieces, as pictured, for a confident "denim tuxedo" look, that is back in style now in a big way. A great pair of sunglasses, a trendy leather bag, and black ankle boots (or basic white sneakers, if your vibe is more sporty) are the perfect accessories for keeping this look in the now. 02 of 09 Mix Your Denim Washes Double denim looks fresh when you mix denim washes. Timur Emek/Getty Images Denim on denim can look great when you mix up your fabric shades. For a more modern, street style fashion vibe, try combining denim separates in radically different denim washes, such as the combination of a vintage-inspired, light blue jacket and inky black skinny jeans pictured here. For the most figure flattering outfit when you wear double denim, keep in mind that darker washes create a slimming effect, while lighter shades of denim draw attention to the body areas they cover. So if you're curvy below the waist, the most flattering ensemble for you will be one that combines lighter denim on top, with a dark wash jean (or other denim separate) on the bottom. As seen here, pairing an eye-catching, patchwork denim jacket over dark jeans is a trendy and youthful look. Better yet, this look works for just about every body shape, from skinny and petite to curvy and plus sizes. Christian Vierig/Getty Images For a cute, casual look that's great for plenty of weekend occasions, from baseballs games to concerts and parties, layer a cropped denim jacket over your favorite jean skirt. You can wear a jean bomber jacket with a denim mini-skirt, as pictured here. Or try wearing a classic jean jacket with a distressed skirt for a rocker vibe, with a denim pencil skirt for a more classic look, or choose a long, floor-length denim skirt for a bohemian chic feel. Whatever length of skirt you choose, keep your top simple with this casual outfit, in case you do unbutton your jacket at some point. Try a slouchy, solid-colored tee-shirt or tank top. Finish your look with a pair of comfortable flats or ankle boots and one or two simple accessories, such as a cute cap, bangle bracelet or stud earrings. 04 of 09 Casual Date Outfit Christian Vierig/Getty Images Here's another great way to wear a denim jacket with a jean mini-skirt. This flirty, double denim outfit is perfect for a coffee date, meeting the parents, or walking through the park with that someone special. 05 of 09 Cute Going Out Outfit Street style boyfriend jeans, denim jacket and crop top. Kirstin Sinclair/Getty Images Going out with friends? You'll turn heads and look downtown cool when you pair relaxed boyfriend jeans with a sexy crop top, as pictured here. This confident outfit is perfect for layering with a denim jacket, for coverage when you're riding the subway, or when the temperature dips at night. Add your favorite accessories, such as a great statement necklace, or fierce ankle boots, to make this look your own. 06 of 09 Chic Daytime Outfit Edward Berthelot/Getty Images A denim blazer looks polished for chic daytime wear when paired with fresh white jeans. You can wear this easy outfit to look polished for weekend shopping and other outings, or even out on a date. Dressed up with nice earrings, good shoes and a structured leather bag, it also makes a great go-to look for casual Fridays at the office, for those of you whose workplaces have denim-friendly days. 07 of 09 Weekend Outfit - Streamlined Double Denim Look fresh for fall in double denim. Christian Vieirg/Getty Images If you're all about a streamlined skinny jeans silhouette, try wearing an outfit of slim-fitting jean separates, in deep indigo or black denim washes. The most important thing to remember for this look is perfect fit, so be sure to choose jeans that hug your curves snugly, for a confident effect that's flattering to any body type. Shoes are super-important with this look, too, so wear a pair you love that broadcasts your own, personal style, whether that's sneakers, loafers or tall, sexy leather boots as pictured here. 08 of 09 The Denim Suit for Work Daniel Zuchnik/Getty Images Surprise your co-workers with your fresh fashion style, when you wear a denim blazer and jeans to the office, in place of a pantsuit. A structured, longer denim blazer in a boyfriend fit, worn over slim ankle length jeans in a similar shade, will look chic and fashion-forward at the same time. Dress it up for the office with a few key accessories, including a quality bag, high heeled shoes, and delicate jewelry. 09 of 09 Denim Jacket and Jorts Christian Vierig/Getty Images A classic denim jacket is a great layering piece, and comes in handy when you want to add color — or casualness — to an all-black outfit. This street style star layers hers over black jean shorts and a black t-shirt, instantly dressing up a casual outfit for city strolls and shopping.
