Dry, chapped lips can be painful and frustrating to deal with. Many people deal with this phenomena all year around, and some people deal with it just during the winter. Find out here why chapped lips happen and how to prevent them.  Plus learn a quick and easy way to exfoliate your lips.

Why Our Lips Get Chapped and Dry

The skin on our lips is thin and more delicate than on other areas of our body.

Moisture quickly evaporates from our lips especially when you are in a cold environment which is why more people have chapped lips during colder months. In addition certain medications can cause dry lips and so can licking your lips. When you lick your lips you leave saliva on your lips which evaporates quickly and makes your lips more dry than they were before. Though it is hard avoiding biting and licking your lips as much as you can. Breathing through your nose also dries out your lips so avoid doing that as well if you can.

During the winter months keep the air around you as moist as possible; invest in a humidifier so that the air around you is not too dry. Before you go outside during the winter be sure to apply a thick lip balm, preferably with sun protection in it, and also cover your lips with a scarf if possible. This will prevent the dry winter air from sucking the moisture out of your lips.

Keep lip balms like Aquaphor Lip Repair or Lucas Papaw Ointment on hand to keep your lips moisturized and smooth. Invest in a lip product that has SPF in it like Supergoop! Fusion Lip Balm SPF 30. You can also find plenty of lip glosses and lipsticks that have sun protection in them and that also hydrate and soothe your dry, chapped lips.

Fresh Sugar Rose SPF 15 Lip Treatment are great for this purpose.

Exfoliating Your Lips

If you want your lip product to work better you need to exfoliate your lips. Why? Once you remove all the dead skin that is just sitting on top of your lips the product you apply to hydrate will work much better. Also any lipstick or lip glosses that you apply after exfoliating will go on much smoother and look better. There are many great products that will help you exfoliate your lips including e.l.f. Here's How:
