Highlight your cheekbones using the contouring method. All you need is bronzer, blush and a big fluffy brush.

Why Contouring the Cheekbones Has Become So Trendy

When we are younger, our faces still retain some of the baby fat we were born with. The problem with chubby cheeks, however, is that it can hide the amazing bone structure just beneath it.

The reverse happens when we age and we lose that baby fat.

The fat melts away leaving the cheekbones at attention. I remember a moment in my mid-30s when I caught sight of my bone structure in a reflection of a subway window. "Wow," I thought, "I have great cheekbones. Who knew?" All of a sudden, I looked like my mother did at my age.

You can highlight your bone structure at any age using contouring. When you are young and your cheeks flush with chub, you can create the illusion of cheekbones and a square jawbone. As you age, you can use the same technique to highlight your bone structure.

Cheek contouring has become hugely trendy because of the amazing optical illusions you can create with makeup. With video blogging, you can watch videos on how to transform a chubby face into a chiseled one, all with the help of a few makeup tools and tricks. Here's how to do it.

The Tools You'll Need

You don't need much to get this look. Basically, you need a fluffy powder brush, a blush that's flattering to your coloring (rose and pinks usually work well, see my list of the best blushes) and a bronzer (see my list of the best bronzers).

How to Highlight Your Cheekbones

Before we move on to the jawline, we'll start with the cheeks. First, pull your hair back with a headband to keep it away from your face, then follow these directions.

  • Smile into a mirror, noting the apples of your cheeks. Apply blush to the apples of your cheeks, blending the blush along the cheek's fat pad to the ear. Blend well so you have a "flushed effect" and not an "I put too much blush on this morning" effect.
  • Dip your fluffy brush into the bronzer and blow off any excess.
  • Purse your lips in a mirror and apply bronzer just under each cheekbone. If you can't see the area just below the cheekbone, suck in your cheeks. Blend well.

Stand back and note how your cheekbones suddenly appear more prominent. You're welcome.
