These DIY Recipes Will Strengthen Damaged or Weakened Hair

Kerastase makes a phenomenal hair mask for damaged hair, but it's $53. Why spend that money on one mask, when you can make your own hair mask using basic ingredients that are good enough to eat.

The recipes below are great for soothing and repairing cuticles damaged from hair coloring, hair straightening, hair tools such as flat-irons or curling irons or chlorine and salt water. These masks work on all hair types including coarse, frizzy, dry, oily, fine and wavy hair. What I love most about them are the ingredients, which are so yummy you'll want to eat them while you wait for the mask to take effect.

Apply once or twice a week. For best results, let the masks sit for at least 15 minutes under a shower cap.

Hot Oil Treatment for Hair (That You Make Yourself!)

This hot oil treatment is a real treat for dry, coarse, oily or damaged hair. You can use any oil, but I prefer sweet almond oil, extra virgin coconut oil or even castor oil.

I recommend using this wrap once a month. You'll have to shampoo hair at least twice to remove all the oil, which will dry crunchy if it's not washed out. But the effects are worth it. Keep the treatment simple (warm up your favorite oil) or go all out with drops of essential oil, some infused herbs, and hot towels.

Milk and Honey Mask for Damaged Hair

Milk and honey work wonders on brittle, damaged hair that tends to be thin and easily weighed down by heavy conditioners and oil treatments. This recipe uses both milk and honey to restore your hair vitality. Use cream if you have coarse hair, skim milk if you have fine hair and whole milk if you have normal hair (meaning, not really coarse or really fine).

Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole milk (use cream if you have super coarse hair or low-fat milk for fine hair)
  • 2 teaspoons honey
  • Note: If you use low-fat milk, add a teaspoon of flour to thicken this mask.

Recipe

  1. Warm up milk in the microwave so it's not too hot to the touch.
  2. Add the honey and stir until fully dissolved.
  3. If you use low-fat milk, add a teaspoon of flour to thicken mask, otherwise, it won't stay on hair.
  4. Pour over dry hair, massaging into hair to ensure all strands are covered.
  5. Place a shower cap over hair. Leave for 15-20 minutes. Shampoo as you normally would.

Banana & Olive Oil Mask for Damaged Hair

Extra Virgin Coconut Oil

My favorite oil to keep in the bathroom is extra virgin coconut oil. In the winter, I slather it on my body after a shower and towel off the excess. I also spread it on my face and exfoliate with a damp washcloth before applying sunscreen year-round.

In India, women use coconut oil on their hair to give it shine and to help repair damaged cuticles. You can use it a couple times a week in place of conditioner. Simply scoop up 2 tablespoons of coconut oil in your palm and work it into the bottom 2/3 of hair after you shampoo in the shower. Leave it on while you shave or wash your body, then rinse out. If you find it's simply too greasy, follow with another shampoo. Keep in mind that a little coconut oil goes a long way.

Eggs & Mayonnaise Hair Mask

Damaged hair can mean frizzy hair and this recipe works by de-frizzing hair. Here's the recipe:

  1. Separate the yolks of 2 eggs from their whites.
  2. Whisk the egg yolks with 1 tablespoon of mayonnaise.
  3. Place this mask on the bottom 2/3rds of dry or damp hair. If you have a lot of hair, you can double the recipe.
  4. Put a shower cap over your head and let it sit for at least 15 minutes before washing out.

Avocado & Olive Oil Hair Mask

Avocados are incredibly moisturizing to damaged hair. Simply mash up an avocado with a teaspoon or 2 of olive oil. Separate dry hair into 4 sections (2 up, 2 down) and using a pastry brush, apply ​the mixture to each section of hair, starting with the bottom 2 first. You might have a friend help with this process. Once the entire head is covered in the avocado mixture, put a shower cap over it and enjoy a cup of tea or a TV show. After a half-hour, rinse in the shower and shampoo using a mild shampoo and finish by conditioning hair.

Note: If you have oily hair, don't apply the mixture to the scalp or the crown or to the first inch or two of hair growing from the scalp.

Jojoba Oil

Jojoba oil is a great oil to keep in the bathroom for your hair. You can get it from any health food store. Simply massage a few drops of it into your scalp if you have coarse hair and work the oil down to the tips of ​your hair. Apply only to the ends of hair if you have oily hair. Make sure to fully rinse out the oil before towel-drying hair. You can also add a few drops to your shampoo for added moisturizing benefits.
