Kerastase makes a phenomenal hair mask for damaged hair, but it's expensive. Why spend money on one mask, when you can make your own using basic ingredients that are good enough to eat?

These homemade hair mask recipes are great for soothing and repairing cuticles damaged from hair coloring, straightening, tools such as flat-irons or curling irons, or chlorine and salt water. The masks work on all hair types, including coarse, frizzy, dry, oily, fine, and wavy hair. The best part is that the ingredients may already be in your kitchen.

For best results, apply a hair mask once or twice a week. Any mask is most effective if you let it sit for at least 15 minutes under a shower cap before washing it away.

Hot Oil Treatment for Dry Hair

A hot oil treatment is a real treat for dry, coarse, oily, or damaged hair. You can use any oil, but damaged hair can really benefit from sweet almond oil, extra virgin coconut oil, or avocado oil. Keep the treatment simple (warm up your favorite oil) or go all out by adding drops of essential oil, some infused herbs, and hot towels.

To keep your hair healthy, use this wrap once a month. You'll have to shampoo your hair at least twice to remove all the oil. It will dry crunchy if it's not washed out properly. However, the effects are worth it.

Milk and Honey Mask for Damaged Hair

Milk and honey work wonders on brittle, damaged hair that tends to be thin and easily weighed down by heavy conditioners and oil treatments. This recipe uses both of those ingredients to restore your hair's vitality. 

Ingredients

Use cream if you have coarse hair, low-fat skim milk if you have fine hair, and whole milk if you have normal hair. If you use low-fat milk, add 1 teaspoon flour to thicken the mask or it won't stay in your hair.

  • 2 cups milk
  • 2 teaspoons honey

How to Use It

  1. Warm up milk in the microwave so it's not too hot to the touch.
  2. Add the honey (and flour, if using) and stir until it's fully dissolved.
  3. Pour over dry hair, massaging it in to ensure every strand is covered.
  4. Place a shower cap over your hair and leave it for 15 to 20 minutes.
  5. Rinse it out and shampoo as normal.

Banana and Olive Oil Mask for Damaged Hair

The banana and olive oil mask is perfect for restoring damaged hair. Whether your locks are suffering from chemical, heat, chlorine, or sun damage, this one can work miracles.

Bananas will help balance the pH of your hair and contain an amino acid that adds strength. The olive oil brings in much-needed moisture. If you use it once a week, you should see a tremendous difference in your hair's health.

Extra Virgin Coconut Oil

Extra virgin coconut oil is one ingredient you'll want to keep in your bathroom at all times. It can hydrate dry hair in winter, repair damaged cuticles, and give your tresses a beautiful shine. It's also an excellent way to moisturize your face.

You can use coconut oil a couple times a week in place of conditioner. Simply scoop up 2 tablespoons in your palm and work it into the bottom 2/3 of your hair after shampooing in the shower. Leave it on while you shave or wash your body, then rinse it out.

If you find that it's simply too greasy, follow it up with another shampoo. Keep in mind that a little coconut oil goes a long way, so adjust the amount you use to match how much hair you have.

Jojoba oil is another great oil to keep in the bathroom for your hair. It's easy to find online and at natural food stores and has amazing healing properties for damaged hair. It's a quick fix that you can use a few times a week.

  • For coarse hair, massage a few drops of jojoba oil into your scalp and work the oil down to the tips of your hair.
  • For oily hair, apply the oil only to the ends of hair.
  • Make sure to fully rinse out the oil before towel-drying your hair.
  • You can also add a few drops to your shampoo for added moisturizing benefits.

Egg and Mayonnaise Hair Mask

The ultimate hair mask may be waiting in your refrigerator. A mask made with nothing more than egg yolks and mayonnaise can instantly de-frizz damaged hair. The recipe is so simple, that there's no reason why you shouldn't give it a shot.

Ingredients

  • 2 egg yolks
  • 1 tablespoon mayonnaise

If you have a lot of hair, you may need to double this.

How to Use It

  1. Separate the yolks of 2 eggs from their whites.
  2. Whisk the yolks with 1 tablespoon of mayonnaise.
  3. Place the mask on the bottom 2/3 of dry or damp hair.
  4. Put a shower cap over your head and let it sit for at least 15 minutes before washing out.

Avocado and Olive Oil Hair Mask

Avocados are incredibly moisturizing to damaged hair. When the fruit is combined with olive oil, it makes an incredible hair mask. This one is best when left on for a half hour, so prepare a cup of tea or enjoy your favorite relaxing activity while you wait.

Ingredients

  • 1 ripe avocado
  • 1–2 teaspoons olive oil

How to Use It

If you have oily hair, don't apply the mixture to your scalp, crown, or to the first couple inches of your roots. It will only increase the oils.

  1. Mash up an avocado with 1 or 2 tablespoons olive oil.
  2. Separate dry hair into four sections (two up, two down).
  3. Use a pastry brush to apply the mixture to each section of hair, starting at the bottom. You might need to have a friend help with this process.
  4. Once the entire head is covered, put on a shower cap and wait for 30 minutes.
  5. Rinse in the shower and shampoo using a mild shampoo. Finish by conditioning your hair lightly.
