Flattering Hairstyles for Heart-Shaped Faces

Say Yes to Long, Side-Swept Bangs

Not sure if you have a heart-shaped face? Actress Reese Witherspoon is a prime example, and her hair always looks great. She's sported shoulder-length bobs, long waves and even shorter hair, but one thing she's rarely without is side-swept bangs. Why? Perhaps because of her face shape.

The only cut she didn't look great in was the chin-length bob she sported in summer of 2008. While bobs can look great on heart-shaped faces, the cut didn't work on Witherspoon.

Heart-shaped faces are wider up top, which can look a bit top heavy, according to hairstylist Andy LeCompte in InStyle magazine. You can balance out the face with long, side-swept bangs that "draw attention down and towards the eyes," says LeCompte. He says the shortest pieces should hit your face at the arch of your brow. The longest pieces should hit the outer corners of eyes.

Almost all pixie hairstyles look great on heart-shaped faces.

"All those little pieces help emphasize the cheekbones and eyes; it's almost as if you build in cheekbones with this cut," says stylist Jimmy Paul in Allure Magazine.

The pixie may seem like a wash-and-go type of haircut, and it is. However, you will need trims every five to six weeks. This cut is also best for women without kinky, curly hair, says stylist Rodney Cutler in Glamour magazine.

Not everyone can get away with a pixie. The cut can make a square face look more square and a long face look even more oblong. So if you have a heart-shaped face, you pretty much own the pixie cut.

This long, graduated bob with a bit of wave on actress Ali Larter is a look that's particularly flattering on heart-shaped faces, says hairstylist Andy Lecompte in Allure magazine. Lecompte is the stylist behind Larter's gorgeous cut.

Note how Katie Holmes's bob is heavy at the chin. This balances out her amazing cheeks with her pointed chin. Chin-length bobs are great for your face shape; just make sure the ends are a bit tapered. Side-swept bangs are also gorgeous on this face shape.

Hide a Wide Forehead with Side-Swept Bangs

This is a great cut for any face shape, but on a heart-shaped face it cuts in at a great angle showing off bone structure. The long, side-swept bangs cover a large forehead (typical of heart-shaped faces).

If you have curly hair, consider this gorgeous style. Curls can get heavy, so be sure to have them tapered on the ends. You want your stylist to cut out a lot of the heaviness in your hair (some stylists choose to cut curly hair when it's dry). Also, try to cut down on shampooing. You'll find your curls look best the less you shampoo. Instead, use a heavy conditioner in the shower (curly hair tends to be dry hair).

This style requires a styling gel to keep down frizz and flyaways and hold hair in place. Try Philip B styling gel, the stylists' secret because it's not expensive and holds hair without making it stiff or crunchy, according to InStyle magazine (buy from Amazon).

Keri Russell has a classic heart-shaped face. Other celebs who share this face shape are Katie Holmes, Jennifer Lopez, Rachel Bilson, Reese Witherspoon, and Ziyi Zhang.

Jennifer Garner

Here's another A-list movie star who shares this face shape. If you are looking for good haircuts for your heart-shaped face, you can't go wrong following Jennifer Garner's style.

Here, she shows off bangs with long hair. Avoid short, blunt-cut bangs and harsh, choppy layers.

Jennifer Aniston

Jennifer Aniston has a very strong chin and always has the best hair. If you have long, thick hair, you can't go wrong mimicking an Aniston haircut. Add in golden highlights to long hair to make it less boring and give it dimension.

Rachel Bilson

The long waves on Rachel Bilson here soften a pointy chin. Since most hair has natural wave in it, let hair air dry and scrunch it as it dries. Once it's dry, you can wind hair around the barrel of a curling iron to get more volume.

Styles to Avoid for Heart-Shaped Faces

So what type of styles should you avoid?

Be careful with too much height at the crown of your head. Here, Jennifer Love-Hewitt has her hair piled atop her head, making her heart-shaped face a bit top-heavy. A better look would emphasize fullness at the sides of the head.

The secret is balancing out your chin, so you want to avoid styles that are top-heavy. Slicked-back hair shows off the face too much. You rarely see Jennifer Aniston with her hair slicked back and it's for a reason.

Gwyneth Paltrow

Gwyneth Paltrow has a square-shaped face, but has a perfect cut for a heart-shaped face. This is the perfect bob for a heart face because the cut doesn't hit above the chin. If you want a bob, choose one that falls at or below the jawline.

Draw attention to your eyes and cheekbones instead of your chin with side-swept bangs like singer Michelle Williams.

A long bob with fringe on a heart-shaped face is flattering, just make sure the bob falls at your chin or just below it. Long, side-swept bangs look great with any length of cut. You can do a shoulder-length cut with long layers or long hair with these bangs.
