After all, what if there’s an awkward silence? What if the conversation lags? What should you even talk about? Fortunately, there’s no need to worry, as this list of go-to questions can not only enable you to keep the conversation flowing, but can also help you to determine if you’re actually interested in this person. In fact, by asking the right questions, you can share about yourself while simultaneously learn a great deal about your date. That way, you can see if you have potential for a great relationship in the future. 1. Where did you grow up? If you want to open the door to share different topics and aspects about both of your childhoods, this is a great question to ask. Not only can this lead to sharing about your families as well as your interests in school, but it can give you both an opportunity to share funny stories and interesting anecdotes about your youth. 2. What do you like to do in your free time? An important question to ask on a first date is about your date’s interests. For example, does he or she practice yoga, go hiking and/or play tennis? Is he or she in a band or love to hit up local karaoke bars? By asking about his or her free-time activities, you can learn about your date’s priorities as well as share about your own passions and pursuits. 3. What do you enjoy about your job? When it comes to asking questions about your date’s profession, it’s important to ask a question that paints you as a positive person. In fact, since there are some people who don’t totally enjoy what they do, this approach can keep the conversation happy and upbeat, even if your date isn’t totally enamored with his or her work or work environment. 4. What’s your favorite show, movie and/or book? If you want to learn about your partner’s interests, another key question to ask on a first date is in regards to which shows, movies and/or books are at the top of his or her list. For instance, is he or she into science fiction, action or romantic comedies? Does he or she have a favorite actor, director or author? When you learn about your date’s top genres, you can determine right off the top if you have commonalities and shared interests. 5. What kind of music do you like? Another important way to learn about your date comes from his or her music preferences. For example, does he or she like country, pop or alternative rock? Does he or she have a favorite band, song or interesting concert and/or music festival experience? When you’re discussing music with your date, it can help you figure out if you and this person are in tune with one another. 6. What’s your favorite food and/or restaurant? When you’re looking to learn about someone on a first date, a hot topic that’s likely to put a smile on both of your faces is food. After all, if you’re an adventurous eater, this is the perfect time to open up about your wild food experiences as well as learn about the foods and restaurants that are on the top of your date’s food and restaurant list. When talking about food, this can also help to open the door to discussing locations and possible food types to have on a second date! 7. If you could travel anywhere, where would you go? If you’re on a first date, talking about travel is a great way to keep the conversation moving and the sparks flying. After all, this gives you both the opportunity to share stories about your past trips, vacation experiences and favorite travel buddies, but you can also discuss your ideal travel destinations and the places that are at the top of your must-see list. 8. Are you an animal person? When you’re on a first a date, another go-to topic to discuss is animals. For instance, is your date a dog, cat or bird person? Does he or she have a pet and/or do you? Talking about animals can help to put a paw-sitive spin on any first date!
