Finding Online K-12 Jobs

These companies offer work-at-home K-12 jobs.

While the college level has been the biggest growth area for distance learning jobs, the number of online K-12 jobs is expanding as school districts offer more remote services to students. Certified K-12 teachers and others with teaching experience at elementary, middle school and high school levels can find online jobs in a variety of companies. Most jobs listed below are online tutoring or teaching, but some of the K-12 jobs here are in instructional design and test writing, scoring and reviewing.

Aim-4-A Tutoring

Level: Elementary, middle, high school

The online division of Aim Academics, which has physical locations in the United States, hires tutors from all over the world to work with students in European, North American and Australian time zones. A teaching certificate is not required, and pay is relatively low. See more online tutor jobs.

California Virtual Academies

Education/certification requirements: Four-year degree, at least three years teaching experiences, California teaching credentials

Connections Academy

Company contracts with school districts to provide virtual educational programs that serve K-12 students in various states. Certification required for teaching positions, but instructional design jobs may only need teaching and/or instructional design experience.

K-12 tutors in math, science and English/reading in the Supplemental Education Services (SES) and No Child Left Behind (NCLB) program are paid an hourly rate of around $20. These jobs require U.S. residency and a teaching certificate. However, freelance tutors may pay a fee and be listed in the company’s online platform. These tutors set their own online tutoring rates, and no specific education or certification requirements are needed.

Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth (CTY)

In this program geared toward gifted students, instructors make assignments and write progress reports and evaluations for students. Search CTY or "work at home" in JHU Jobs database.

K12

Level: Kindergarten through grade 12

The company hires teachers certified in specific states to teach online as well as other education professionals to develop curricula. Teaching jobs require certification in the state the students live in.

Kaplan

Level: High school
Subjects: Test prep in SAT, ACT, AP subjects
Position type: Test prep tutor (part-time)
Education/certification requirements: Bachelor degree preferred, score in the 90th percentile of test prep subject

While Kaplan has work at home openings for many college-level online instructors and instructional designers, below the college level, it only has test prep jobs. Use "virtual" as the keyword in the job search database.

Pearson

Level: High school
Subjects: Language arts, math, science and social studies
Position type: Part-time test scorers, writers, reviewers
Education/certification requirements: Bachelor degree, high school teaching experience

Home-based, online tutors work 9-20 hours per week. Peak season for hiring is May-August and November-December. Most tutors are paid on an hourly basis. Paid training.
