KLM Open Trivia and Notes: Since the foundation of the European Tour in 1972, three golfers have won the KLM Open three times: Seve Ballesteros (1976, 1980, 1986); Bernhard Langer (1984, 1992, 2001); and Simon Dyson (2006, 2009, 2011). Ballesteros' 1976 victory was his first win on the European Tour. He won by eight strokes. In the full history of the tournament, its most-frequent winner was Flory Van Donck of Belgium. Van Donck won it five times - 1936, 1937, 1946, 1951 and 1953. The 1939 Dutch Open was the first tournament in Europe won by South African Bobby Locke. Per-Ulrik Johansson shot 78 in the opening round at the 1991 Heineken Dutch Open. But then he set the tournament scoring record of 62 in the third round. Unfortunately for Johansson, Payne Stewart also shot 62 in the third round, and Stewart won by nine shots. That was Stewart's only victory on the European Tour. Another American who earned his only Euro Tour win here was Scott Hoch, who won the 1995 tournament. Jose Maria Olazabal's win at the 1989 tournament required a 9-hole playoff. Olazabal outlasted Roger Chapman and Ronan Rafferty in that playoff, establishing a Euro Tour record for longest sudden-death playoff. J.H. Taylor was 58 years old when he won the 1929 Dutch Open. It was the last victory in a significant tournament by any member of the Great Triumvirate (Taylor, Harry Vardon, James Braid). Tournament scoring records for both 72 holes and 18 holes were set in 2015. Winner Thomas Pieters' 261 lowered the tourney record by two strokes. And Matthew Fitzpatrick shot 60 in the second round. Fitzpatrick missed by an inch sinking a putt on the 18th hole that would have given him the first 59 in European Tour history. Since the tournament became part of the European Tour in 1972, the first Dutch winner was Maarten Lefeber in 2003. Joost Luiten (2013, 2016) was the first Dutch golfer to win twice since 1972.
