DIY Sunflower Oil Treatments for Dry Hair

Sunflower oil is high in essential fatty acids and antioxidants and is deeply nourishing to dry hair and itchy scalps. It's so great for the hair and scalp that it's the second most common base oil used in the hair oil industry, according to the Journal of Cosmetic Science.

While sunflower oil is inexpensive, many of the products on the market today that contain it, also contain sulfates and laureates and other chemicals that aren't so great for your hair and skin.

Instead of investing in expensive lotions and potions that can add chemicals and residue to your hair, use these simple sunflower oil recipes to make your dry hair silky smooth and manageable. Sunflower oil has smoothing properties and is considered non-comedogenic.

Basic Sunflower Oil Treatment

This is the simplest of my recipes.

How to Use: Wet hair in the shower. Apply a quarter-size amount of sunflower oil to your scalp (more or less as needed). Massage it into the scalp. Comb the oil through to the ends of your hair. Wrap hair in a hot wet towel for up to an hour. If you don't have that much time, I recommend wrapping hair in Saran Wrap for 20 minutes. Shampoo hair thoroughly.

Hair & Scalp Treatment With Sunflower Oil

This is a more complex hair and scalp treatment that includes more ingredients than your basic sunflower oil.

How to Use: You will need a bottle with a cap on it. I like to use squeeze bottles or even spray bottles for even coverage.

Please all the oils in a bottle, tighten the cap and shake vigorously. Spray or comb into hair from the scalp down the ends.

Massage the oil into the scalp. Rinse thoroughly. Use once or twice a week to condition hair and improve your scalp.
