What to Bring/What Not to Bring

Like the other services, the United States Coast Guard limits what one can and cannot bring with them to Coast Guard "Boot Camp."

There are three categories of personal items:

  • Contraband: Items which are strictly forbidden
  • Stowage: Items which may be placed into your civilian bag and stored until you depart boot camp
  • Permitted: Items which are allowed to be taken into training.

Contraband

  • Weapons
  • Tobacco Products and associated items
  • Consumables (any food or beverage)
  • Alcoholic Beverages
  • Narcotics and drug Paraphernalia
  • Magazines
  • All pornographic photos or materials

Stowage

  • Additional civilian clothing
  • Crew neck t-shirts
  • White socks with visible logos or stripes
  • Excess Jewelry
  • Cassette/CD players, Radios
  • Cameras
  • Games/Cards/Dice
  • Electronic games
  • Electronic address books
  • Extra Checks
  • All items in glass containers
  • Vitamins/nutritional supplements
  • Nonprescription sunglasses
  • Calculators
  • Small travel irons
  • Curlers
  • Barrettes that do not match hair color
  • Excess cosmetics
  • Over the counter medication
  • Condoms
  • Keys
  • Picture frames
  • Hair clippers

Permitted Items

(If you do not bring the following items, you will have to purchase them upon arrival)

  • White v-neck t-shirts (men only, optional for women), 6-10 each
  • Black dress socks (non-blistery type), 6 pair
  • Underpants (white), 6-10 pair
  • Pantyhose (women only, skin tone), 1 pair
  • Sports Bras (women only, white/tan), 6 each
  • Half slip (women only, white/tan), 1 each
  • Hair barrettes/bobby pins (women only), as needed

Permitted Items (Optional)

You are authorized to bring one small sealable plastic bag (no suitcases) containing only the authorized items listed below:

  • Toothbrush
  • Manicure kit
  • Cartridge type razor
  • Talcum powder
  • Aftershave lotion
  • Electric razor
  • Shaving kit
  • Lip balm
  • Hand/body lotion
  • Gold/silver barrettes/bobby pins or ones that match hair color (women only)
  • Cloth covered elastic bands tha match hair color (women only)
  • Feminine hygiene items (women only)
  • Makeup (women only), minimal amount
  • Hair Dryer (women only)
  • Birth Control Pills (women only), if already using - to maintain cycle
  • Wedding bands
  • Watch
  • Religious medallion worn on a chain long enough that it can't be seen under a v-neck t-shirt
  • One quarter inch gold, silver or pearl ball earrings (women only)
  • Stationary, envelopes, stamps
  • Penlight flashlight
  • Wallet
  • Black eyeglass retaining strap
  • Black pens/pencils
  • White long underwear (Oct-Apr)
  • All-white athletic socks
  • Iron
  • Spray starch
  • Bible
  • 1 Religious reference book
  • Sunscreen
  • Non-pornographic photos

If it's not on the above list, consider it "contraband," and do not bring it.
