'Roller Cowards'

SpongeBob SquarePants
SpongeBob SquarePants. Nickelodeon

In "Roller Cowards," SpongeBob and Patrick spend the entire episode working up the courage to ride Glove World's newest attraction, the Fiery Fist O' Pain roller coaster. Anyone who has ever been afraid of rides can relate to the fear that awaits SpongeBob and Patrick at Glove World. The new roller coaster features flames, explosions and sky high hills. You can even lose your spine! "Roller Cowards" is funny because scene after scene is so well-written and so imaginative, from Patrick returning to his rock by lifting his feet and letting his stretched-out TV wires take him home, to the smell of Larry's adrenaline burning off the eyebrows on SpongeBob and Patrick.

'Squid on Strike'

Here's another wonderful episode that plays off the differences between Squidward and SpongeBob. "Squid on Strike" has these two neighbors and coworkers on strike from the Krusty Krab. Of course, SpongeBob doesn't realize what this means until he and Squidward are out of jobs. Squidward begins to realize what his days will be like striking alongside the giddy SpongeBob. Mr. Krabs is having to deal with teenage employees who can't cook. The two of them work out a contract, but not before SpongeBob "dismantles" the Krusty Krab.

  • Favorite scene: When Squidward imagines what his life will be like as an old man, still striking with SpongeBob, "Meh Squidward, meh Squidward, meh Squidward..."

'Club SpongeBob'

In "Club SpongeBob," Squidward squeezes into SpongeBob and Patrick's treehouse, only to realize he doesn't fit. He uses a palm tree to wrench his way back to land, but let's go too soon, propelling the three neighbors into the middle of nowhere. Squidward panics, lost and afraid. But SpongeBob and Patrick follow the instructions of the "magic conch" to receive food and help. Time and again, Squidward is denied after he dismisses the magic of the conch.

'Chimps Ahoy'

"Chimps Ahoy" is probably not at the top of your list of favorite "SpongeBob SquarePants" episodes. But "Chimps Ahoy" has several stellar exchanges and authentic British accents, courtesy of The Young Ones. In "Chimps Ahoy," Sandy Cheeks has to prove to the Chimps, who fund her research, that she is accomplishing something in her underwater tree dome. She gives up, ready to return to Texas. But SpongeBob and Patrick invent something that keeps the Chimps interested long enough for Sandy to prove her worth.

  • Favorite scene: When Patrick goes from Professor to Dr. Professor, to Mr. Dr. Professor Patrick.
  • Favorite quote: "Frankly I'm beginning to doubt the economic benefits of underwater freedoms."

'Pizza Delivery'

Sing along: "Krusty Krab pizza, is the pizza, for you and me." "Pizza Delivery" is the perfect episode to depict SpongeBob's enthusiasm for all things Krusty Krab against Squidward's apathy and cynical nature. The two of them embark on a journey to deliver the very first Krusty Krab pizza to a customer. After losing their boat, and their way, they must find a way back to Bikini Bottom. At every turn, SpongeBob tries to point the way for Squidward, yet Squidward refuses to believe SpongeBob knows what he's doing (even though he does), including riding "not just a boulder, but a rock" back to the Krusty Krab.

  • Favorite scene: After the customer slams his door in SpongeBob's face, Squidward makes sure he swallows the pizza "in one bite."

'Chocolate with Nuts'

"Chocolate with Nuts" is about Patrick and SpongeBob trying to get rich by selling chocolate bars door to door. Along the way, they meet a variety of characters, including a salesman who manages to con them three different times. There are witty punchlines and silly sight gags throughout the episode.

  • Favorite scene: Patrick focuses a little too hard on their unsuspecting customer.

'Rock Bottom'

In "Rock Bottom," Patrick and SpongeBob get off the bus in the wrong part of town after spending the day at Glove World. Somehow Patrick manages to get on the bus back to Bikini Bottom, but SpongeBob is stranded. The citizens of Rock Bottom are creepy and speak in a language that uses raspberries between words. SpongeBob is finally rescued when someone blows up his glove balloon enough to lift him home. The raspberries and SpongeBob's increasing frustration make this a hilarious episode. "Rock Bottom" has SpongeBob running up against Murphy's law over and over again, so it's very relatable.

  • Favorite scene: SpongeBob tries to extract a snack from the vending machine before the bus across the road drives away.

In "Bubblestand," SpongeBob builds a stand where he sells bubble-blowing and bubble-blowing lessons. He teaches Patrick to blow a bubble, but Squidward joins in when he assumes he will be superior in bubble-blowing. From start to finish, "Bubblestand" shows us the innocence and wonder of SpongeBob and Patrick, as well as the slipping cynicism of Squidward. The sound effects of SpongeBob building the stand and biting Patrick's quarter are so simple but so funny.

  • Favorite scene: SpongeBob silently posting his sign for lessons while Patrick tries, and fails, to make a bubble.

'Sailor Mouth'

"Sailor Mouth" just barely missed being in the number one slot. From the second season in 2001, "Sailor Mouth" depicts Patrick and SpongeBob learning a naughty word, which leads to a lesson from Mr. Krabs in more naughty words, which leads to the three of them saying naughty words far too often. These naughty words are censored using dolphin squeaks and other sea-worthy sounds. The plot of "Sailor Mouth" is genius because children can relate to the forbidden thrill of using curse words, and adults can laugh at the parody of TV censorship.

  • Favorite scene: When Mr. Krabs stubs his foot and uses all 13 of the worst curse words while SpongeBob counts them on 13 fingers.
  • Where to find it: Sea Stories DVD

'Band Geeks'

"Band Geeks" has so many of the best elements of SpongeBob, crafted into a story whose rhythm flows smoothly and quickly to reach a poignant end. In "Band Geeks," Squidward recruits the citizens of Bikini Bottom to play in a marching band for the Bubble Bowl. The entire premise is funny just to think about. Fleshing out the storyline are hilarious scenes, such as Plankton playing his harmonica solo, Sandy inserting Patrick into his trombone and SpongeBob showing Squilliam his "eager face." "Band Geeks" culminates in the '80s-movie ending complete with a keytar and freeze-frame jump in the air.

  • Favorite quote: Mr. Krabs says, "Well, these claws ain't just for attracting mates."
