The game takes place on an Earth that has been ravaged by a plague. Infected humans are a constant threat, but fellow survivors can be just as dangerous. The story follows Joel and Ellie as they venture across the country. Not only does The Last of Us offer one of the most compelling narratives to come along on the PS3, but it also has great game mechanics and beautiful visuals for a complete package. There’s survival, action, and stealth, and all of that’s woven into a story that’s tense, warm, and gritty. Best for Families: LittleBigPlanet 2 While not as well-known for their family-friendly games as Nintendo, Sony does have a slew of great titles that are fit for all ages. At the top of their roster is LittleBigPlanet 2. As far as platforming games go, LittleBigPlanet 2 is one of the cutest, and it's highly inventive at the same time. The game features adorable characters that appear to be woven and move around in amusing ways. Multiplayer formatting lets friends and family play through the levels and puzzles together, working as a team to find solutions to the game’s many challenges — or, even working against one another for a laugh. While the game already offers plenty, the ability to create your own levels and enjoy user-created content just offers even more to do. Best Multiplayer: Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare Courtesy of Amazon When it first came out, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare brought the military shooter into the modern day, and it came with a bunch of exciting military technology. Modern Warfare offers an exciting story with a strong cinematic feel; the game combines high action and stealth in its missions, and at the time of its release, it was cutting-edge graphics-wise. In multiplayer mode, there were plenty of weapons to choose from, and you can boost your character with perks. If you enjoy multiplayer FPS games, this is the best one. Best RPG: The Elder Scrolls V - Skyrim When thinking of some of the best role-playing games of all time — we're not even limiting the scope to PS3 games, but all games — The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is definitely up there in the ranks. The game takes players to a new region in the epic series of RPGs, introducing players to dragons and a wide array of powers that come along with being Dragonborn. Skyrim offers an incredible amount of places to go and things to do. The main quest is hours and hours long, and you can get distracted with side narratives that are just as long and engaging as the main quest. Even if you spent 100 hours playing, you'd still find more to see and do the next time you picked it up. Best Sports: MLB 10 - The Show While which game you feel is the best for sports is likely going to come down to which sport you personally prefer, MLB 10: The Show executes so well that it just stands out above the rest. It features realistic player animations and great visuals to give you the feeling that you’re watching a real baseball game as you play. You can play normal games, work on batting, pitching, calling pitches, and a lot more. You’ve also got Home Run Derby and MLB All-Star Futures Game modes. With plenty of customization for your teams and a player creator, you can really get into the game. Best Combat: Super Street Fighter IV As long as fighting games have been a popular genre, Street Fighter has been a top name among them. Super Street Fighter IV takes a lot of what was on offer with Street Fighter IV, and adds even more extras. Additional characters are added on top of the original roster of 25 from the earlier release, which included classics like Ryu and Ken. Beyond adding new characters, new ultra combos were also added along with improvements to the online features. An arcade mode even offers story scenes to help familiarize you with each character. Best Racing: Wipeout HD with Fury DLC Courtesy of PlayStation Store If you want a racing game with incredible speed and a little bit of combat to boot, then Wipeout HD — with the additional Fury expansion — is a top-notch title. The game offers you high-speed racing on futuristic tracks with equally futuristic hovering ships. Spicing up the wild racing is an arsenal of weapons that can help you gain an edge on your competition. The game brings the iconic franchise into Full HD and gives you a smooth 60 frames per second. Best Horror: BioShock If you want a great horror game with plenty to be afraid of, the PS3 has no shortage of worthwhile picks. BioShock, a survival game inspired by dystopian thinkers like George Orwell and Ayn Rand, definitely nabs our top spot with a storyline that revolves around exploring an underwater city seemingly stuck in the 1960s. You’ll meet plenty of people who’ve lost their minds and run into genetically-mutated armies and giant plasmid-enhanced humans. Throughout the game, your choices — whether or not to harvest orphans or rescue them, to loot dead bodies for money or hack security systems to avoid detection —will have consequences.
