The Best Hair Color Removers/Correctors

One of the scariest services to perform as a hair color professional is a color correction. Color correction products can be inconsistent, stubborn, and are notoriously hard to work with. I've personally tried to stay away from them since beauty school and usually opt for a bleach shampoo, or I avoid color corrections all together. But that's a coward's way out! And color correctors have come a long way since I was in beauty school. Below I've broken down the top choices in today's world of color correction so you can take the guess work out next time you're faced with this challenging service.

Color Oops Hair Color Remover

One of the biggest issues with color removers, or color correctors, is the damage to the hair that they leave behind. Luckily you won't have to worry about that with Oops Hair Color Remover. This extra conditioning formula is made without ammonia or bleach, and it removes permanent and semi-permanent hair color in only 20 minutes. Moisturizing soy proteins and aloe vera further protect the hair and allow you to safely recolor the same day with beautiful, even results.

One tip to keep in mind - even when using the most gentle color removers, it may be wise to formulate the final desired color a half level, to one level up. The hair will be porous after the color correction treatment and tends to grab color a little darker than non-treated hair.

This tried and true hair color remover is an effective treatment that contains no ammonia or formaldehyde. It works on all hair types, no matter how long the color has been in the hair. This pleasant smelling treatment gently reduces the size of color molecules, allowing for easy color removal. One 'n Only Colorfix is simple to mix and apply, but make sure to follow every step precisely. I've seen people in the salon take shortcuts with color removal, and the results are never pretty.

Malibu C Color Correction

This little pink packet packs a big punch by safely and successfully removing even the most stubborn hair color. This product is accompanied by a take-home package of shampoo, conditioner and a treatment to further protect and nourish the hair after the color correction service. It's not a necessity, but it's always nice to use a product that has a holistic approach to hair health. We as beauty professionals can only do so much in the salon, and often times it's on our clients to further treat and protect their hair color once they're at home.

Ion - Color Brilliance - Color Corrector

Ion Color Brilliance Color Corrector is the best bet if you're trying to get your client's hair back to it's most natural state. This gentle, non-bleach formula removes permanent hair color without lifting the natural color of the hair. Many color correctors lift both the natural, and unnatural pigments in the hair which gives you less control and most often requires you to recolor after the service.

Note that this product doesn't tend to work so well on dye that has been in the hair for a long time. Use Ion Color Brilliance Color Corrector when working with freshly colored hair that needs to be saved.
