Learn about our Editorial Process Updated on 10/07/19 In the Army, Additional Skill Identifiers (ASIs) show extra skills, training, and qualification a soldier may possess. These skills are in addition to their Military Occupation Specialty (MOS) classification. Some ASI's are awarded only to a soldier in a specified MOS. An example would be Court Reporter (ASI C5), which is issued only to soldiers in Legal Specialist (MOS 27D). Other ASI's can be awarded to soldiers in any MOS. An example of this would be Master Fitness Trainer (ASI P5). The Army maintains an extensive list of all additional skill identifiers that provides information about the soldiers that are eligible to hold the designation. As an example, ASI code 1B identifies Sexual Harassment/Assault Response & Prevention (SHARP) Level I personnel. Individuals in any MOS with this ASI may server as sexual assault response coordinators (SARC) or victim advocates (VA). They will have completed an 80-hour course and must have a rank of Staff Sergeant or higher. Since the position carries significant trust and authority the individual may need to pass suitability screening as well. Additional Skill Training Schools The Army offers ongoing training for service members who want to improve their skills. These schools include technical, physical, tactical, and leadership development opportunities. National Guard members serving on active duty are also eligible to attend the ASI schools. Some schools are open to any MOS specialty. So, as an example, someone from human resources may attend Airborne training alongside someone from vehicle maintenance. Such schools include Airborne, Air Assault, Sapper, Pathfinder, Special Forces, Delta Force, and Ranger. Other schools are MOS-specific education. The last two characters of the MOS will indicate if it has additional skills training available. Any soldier that has an eligible MOS designation may elect to attend the ASI school. SQIs detail the special qualities the soldier must display to be awarded an ASI. Soldiers will attend specialty schools that are directly connected to their assigned MOS. SQI training is a specialty school where they are MOS-specific. Not every MOS will have an SQI school opportunity. Further, the soldier may need to meet other qualifications before being allowed to attend a specific SQI school. Some training will require the individual to hold at least a Warrant Officer designation in their MOS.
