When you’re in a relationship, you may not even realize when your connection with your partner has become imbalanced. And while your goal may be to have something more meaningful and long-lasting, it’s imperative that you pay close attention to the eight warning signs that you’re in a one-sided relationship.

1. You’re doing all of the giving. One of the key characteristics of a one-sided relationship is that you’re giving more than you're receiving.

In other words, you may bend over backwards for your partner, continually do nice things for him or her and surprise him or her with gifts, but these acts of kindness aren’t reciprocated. If you can’t remember the last time that your partner did you a favor, you should do yourself a favor by ending this one-sided relationship.

2. You make all of the plans. Another key sign that your relationship is one-sided is that your partner puts in little to no effort to create opportunities for the two of you to hang out. In essence, you’re the one who initiates contact between the two of you, plans your time with one another and basically puts in all of the work that it takes to keep your connection alive. And if your partner isn’t also going out of his or her way to make sure that you get to spend time together, you should go your separate ways.

3. You’re completely open while your partner remains guarded. If you’re wondering if you’re in a one-sided relationship, another tell-tale sign is that your partner doesn’t open up to you.

In fact, even though you’re totally honest and forthright with him or her, your partner refuses to do the same with you. And if you’re in a relationship with someone who puts up a wall between the two of you, it’s not worth trying to build your connection any further.

4. Your partner is unreliable. Another key characteristic of a one-sided relationship is that you can’t depend on your partner.

And while there are certainly circumstances when things come up and outside commitments can change a person’s plans, your partner has consistently shown you that he or she’s inconsistent when it comes to being there for you. When your partner is flighty and continues to let you down, it’s you who should let go and move on.

5. You haven’t met anyone with close ties to your partner. An additional sign that you’re in a one-sided relationship is that your partner hasn’t really let you into his or her life. In other words, you may have introduced your partner to your social circle, coworkers and/or family, but you’ve rarely had a glimpse into your partner’s world. And when many different aspects of your partner’s life remain a mystery, it’s no mystery that you should end your lopsided relationship.

6. Your partner doesn’t make you a priority. One of the key indicators that you’re in a one-sided relationship is that you don’t feel as though you truly matter to your partner. And while his or her happiness may be paramount to you, it’s not uncommon to sense that your well-being isn’t a top priority for your partner. Remember, when you feel in your gut that your partner is indifferent towards you, it’s imperative that you find a different partner.

7. Your partner doesn’t want to work on your relationship. Another clear sign that you’re in a one-sided relationship is that your partner doesn’t want to deal with or even acknowledge any relationship challenges. And since the key to a long-lasting connection is the ability to work through disagreements and to resolve problems as a couple, your partner’s lack of engagement is actually cause for concern. In reality, if your partner doesn’t want to work through any sort of issues with you, this reflects the fact that he or she’s not truly interested in strengthening or even sustaining your relationship.

8. You’re constantly worrying that your relationship is going to end. Along these lines, an additional indication that you’re in a one-sided relationship is that you’re always stressed about the fragile state of your relationship.

In fact, many people in one-sided relationships live with the ongoing feeling that their partner is pulling away, and this uncertainty adds unnecessary stress and anxiety into their lives. Remember, if you feel as though your partner is drifting away and could break up with you at any second, you should quit while you’re ahead by calling it quits yourself.
