Do you suspect that the person you're dating is a narcissist or has narcissistic tendencies? While the term, "narcissist," gets tossed around a lot today, it's important to understand that narcissism is actually a personality disorder in which a person has a grossly over-inflated sense of self-worth.

With this in mind, if you're trying to figure out if the person you're dating is a narcissist or has narcissistic qualities, there are five key signs that can help you determine if you should stay near or far from this person.

1. This Person Does All the Talking

If you're wondering if your partner is a narcissist, one of the key signs is that this person takes over every conversation and makes it about him or herself. Dominating conversations, showboating and boasting about personal stories and anecdotes are definitive signs that this person has a narcissistic way about him or her.

Have you ever noticed that he or she tends to turn every dialogue into a monologue? Or have you noticed that he or she's the self-proclaimed expert on every single topic? If the focus of every discussion is always on him or her, it's time to choose being single instead.

2. This Person Doesn't Listen to You

Another key sign that you're with a narcissist is that he or she doesn't truly listen to you. If you're constantly trying to get a word in edgewise but feel as though you tend to get interrupted, talked over or ignored, you shouldn't overlook the fact that this person is a narcissist.

If your partner treats you as though what you have to say isn't as important as what he or she has to say, the next thing you should be saying is "goodbye." Remember, there's no reason to date someone who isn't interested in your thoughts, opinions, and concerns.

3. This Person Puts His or Her Needs First

Narcissists are always thinking about themselves and putting themselves first.

For instance, you may find that you always have to hang out with their friends, are typically engaging in the activities that they want to do, and even eating at the restaurants of their choosing regardless of your own desires. While you may think that you're simply being a good partner by choosing to be kind, generous, and accommodating when you go along with their plans, you should think again.

A healthy and happy relationship is about compromise, balance, giving, and taking, but if you're doing all of the giving, and your partner's doing all of the taking, it's actually time for you to take off.

4. This Person Isn't Reliable at All

An additional sign that you're dating a narcissist is that you can't depend on this person. Basically, since a narcissist will always choose to put his or her needs above anyone else's, including yours, it's not uncommon for this person to break plans with you, miss events and occasions that are important to you, and generally be flaky and undependable in most circumstances. If you can rely on the fact that the person you're dating tends to be quite unreliable, then you're likely dating a narcissist.

5. This Person Has an Overblown Sense of Entitlement

Another clear sign that you're dating a narcissist can be the way that he or she treats and talks to others.

If your partner thinks so highly of him or herself that he or she is rude and generally inconsiderate and disrespectful to others, it's time to recognize that this person is a narcissist.

If your partner believes that he or she's the greatest person on the planet and that the world revolves around him or her, your goal should be to meet someone who's a little more grounded instead.
