This tattoo on her left shoulder contains the geographical coordinates of each child's birthplace, according to the Sydney Morning Herald -- and she's had to update it a few times. N 11º 33' 0" E 104º 51' 00" represents the Phnom Penh, Cambodia, location where adopted son Maddox was born. N 9º 2' 0" E 38º 45' 0" marks Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where adopted daughter Zahara was born. S 22º 40' 26" E 14º 31' 40" shows Swakopmund, Namibian, where she gave birth to daughter Shiloh. N 10° 46' 0" E 106º 41' 40" indicates Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, birthplace of adopted son Pax Thien. N 43º 41' 21" E 07º 14' 28" shows the location of Nice, France where she gave birth to her twins -- son Knox Léon and daughter Vivienne Marcheline -- in 2008. 02 of 11 Angelina Jolie's Buddhist Inscription Tattoo Jason Merritt/Getty Images Entertainment/Getty Images Perhaps Jolie's most famous—and prominent—tattoo, she got this Buddhist inscription for her adopted son, Maddox. That tattoo was done in the traditional Thai style—with long needles and a hammer by Noo Sompong Kanhphaiin, who also did the Bengal tiger on her lower back. Jolie had to kneel in prayer as the tattoo was created. "I kind of felt like it was something that I was going through for Maddox because it's for protection," she told Jam! Showbiz in 2003. "I kind of felt that I should suffer through something, that it was part of something that was a ritual, a prayer for him." The inscription translates as: "May your enemies run far away from you. If you acquire riches, may they remain yours always. Your beauty will be that of Apsara. Wherever you may go, many will attend, serve and protect you, surrounding you on all sides. Jolie originally had the Japanese character for "death" in this spot but had it removed. 03 of 11 Angelina Jolie's Lower Back Tattoo Getty Images Don't get too close to Angelina Jolie's sexy lower back—a fierce Bengal tiger protects the actress. You can see part of the animal peeking out from her low-cut open-back dress. The tattoo was created in Bangkok in 2004 by the famous Thai tattoo artist Noo Sompong Kanhphaiin, who chanted a hymn as he worked. The same artist did the shoulder blade inscription above it. 04 of 11 Angelina Jolie's Wrist Rune Getty Images Angelina Jolie's left wrist features a runic inscription. It represents the letter "H" and she got the tattoo while dating Timothy Hutton... but she has said it represents her brother, James Haven. 05 of 11 Angelina Jolie's Left Arm Getty Images Angelina Jolie has a lot of ink on her left side. In addition to the runic "H" on her wrist and the geographical coordinates on her shoulder, she also has an inscription from Tennessee Williams and a series of Roman numerals. The Williams quote reads, "A prayer for the wild at heart kept in cages." She had the tattoo done after completing the film "Girl, Interrupted." "I have a prayer for everyone when I see people who aren't living fully, who aren't happy," she told USA Today. "You can see someone in the grocery store who doesn't look as if they fit in their life, and they have a dream they're not fulfilling, and it makes me sad." Also on that arm are a series of Roman numerals. It began with XIII, representing the number 13, to show that the actress was not superstitious. But maybe she is—because she later added V MCMX—turning it into a date: May 13, 1940. That's the date Winston Churchill said, "I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears, and sweat." 06 of 11 Angelina Jolie's Arabic Tattoo Getty Images The inside of Angelina Jolie's right arm sports the Arabic inscription العزيمة" (pronounced: al-‘azeema). It means "the determination" or "the firm will" according to the Arabic Genie Website, which also reports that there are no foreign flubs here—the tattoo is spelled correctly. The site says the tat could have another meaning as well: "the incantation" or "the spell." So does that make her a witchy woman? Ask Brad Pitt—he should know for sure. 07 of 11 Angelina Jolie's 'Billy Bob' Tattoo Getty Images Angelina Jolie wasn't happy with all her tattoos... and this one is her biggest regret. The tat was meant to honor her husband at the time, actor Billy Bob Thornton. The two were married from 2000-2003, and were known to wear vials of each other's blood. "I'll never be stupid enough to have a man's name tattooed on me again", she said, according to Softpedia. See what the tat looked like after she had the "Billy Bob" part lasered off in the next image. 08 of 11 No More 'Billy Bob' for Angelina Jolie Getty Images Angelina Jolie had the "Billy Bob" tattoo removed... but kept this dragon for a while, although even in this photo it appears that the laser treatments to remove it had begun. This spot now sports the geographical coordinates of the birthplaces of her children -- but you can still see the remains of the former tattoos, even if Jolie wishes you can't. 09 of 11 'Know Your Rights' Tattoo Getty Images Angelina Jolie sports this "Know Your Rights" tattoo across her neck in Gothic lettering, a nod to a cause that's dear to Jolie's heart: human rights. "I think it's what comes down to everything for all these people, for refugees, for everybody. It's for them to know what their rights are, and then gives them the ability—for children who are trafficked, for women who are vulnerable, for everybody," she told CNN's Anderson Cooper in 2006. "The Declaration of Human Rights says everybody has the right to an education, or everybody has the right to freedom of movement. Everybody has the right -- you know, that these things are in our law. If you really look into it, we're all protected somehow." As a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Jolie has worked with refugees around the world. 10 of 11 Angelina Jolie: Girl, Tattooed Getty Images Here's another look at the Tennessee Williams quote on her left arm, and the Arabic inscription on her right. Jolie also sports a black cross right over her crotch. "I got that the day before I married Jonny," she told USA Today, referring to her 1995 marriage to Jonny Lee Miller. "It was all symbolic, and it was a good thing, nothing dark." She also has the Latin phrase "Quod me nutrit me destruit" on her stomach, which means "what nourishes me also destroys me." 11 of 11 Angelina Jolie's Brad Pitt Tattoo Getty Images Jolie may have promised herself never to get another man's name tattooed on her body after the Billy Bob Thornton fiasco. But she hasn't stopped marking her body for the men in her life—she recently got another tattoo, this time to honor partner Brad Pitt. The tattoo, on her inner thigh, was spotted during a recent Vanity Fair photo shoot—but not well enough to make out what it actually says. "It's for Brad," was all Jolie had to say about it when asked by MTV.
