Appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live

Guests on Jimmy Kimmel Live first go through a pre-interview: a producer calls them a few days before the show and goes over stories, current events, and anecdotes that they might want to share. This phone interview is them reviewed with Jimmy Kimmel and he and his producer decide which bits work best and how to craft the conversation that will appear on the air. (Actually, most talk shows engage in the process.) While the show seems like an impromptu conversation, it's really all very planned.

Once a guest arrives for his appearance, the producer escorts him to his dressing room and informs him as to what Kimmel has decided will be discussed. Then it's showtime--when the guest's name is announced, he's waiting in a closed box area; the door lifts up and out he goes to chat with Kimmel.

What's Jimmy like? Guests have reported that he's very generous, present and patient and that he wants people to be comfortable and have fun. He's also very good at throwing cues to guests to help steer the conversation so they can grab the reins and run with it.

When a segment ends, you always see Jimmy lean over and talk to his guest. What's he saying? Guests report he really does continue the conversation.
