The Coolest, Sexiest, Classiest Bob Haircuts

Different very modern bob hairstyles. Getty Images

Bob hairstyles are in no danger of going out of style. Many celebrities (hello Jennifer Lawrence!) are continuing to cut off their long locks for chin-grazing bobs and the longer "demi-bobs" or long bobs.

This gallery features favorite bob hairstyles. But first, a bit of history on the bob.

According to salon owner Eva Scrivo in her book, "Eva Scrivo on Beauty" (buy it from Amazon), the bob originated during World War I as women joined the workforce and no longer had time for pin curls and straightening irons. "Cropped hair became of badge of freedom, rebellion, and independence for working women who had also just gained the right to vote," Scrivo writes.

So who can wear the bob? Anyone with a nice jawline and neck will look good in a bob. Here are some tips to abide by:

  • Face shape. If you have a round face, a long bob is the best bob option for you.
  • Texture. When it comes to hair texture, bobs work best on thin to medium hair.
  • Curls. If you have curly hair, a bob will turn into a triangle on you, unless you get layers cut in and the ends texturized (see photos of short, curly hairstyles that are adorable).
  • Fine hair. If you have fine hair, ask your stylist for a "graduated bob," which are stacked layers cut shorter in the back, longer in the front that give hair needed body and height at the crown.
  • Styling tools. You may need a great flat iron to keep your bob in phenomenal shape. See this list of the best flat irons. Before using a flat iron, spritz on a styling spray that is formulated to act as a protector against heat.

Sienna Miller's Mussy Bob

The beauty world went gaga for Sienna Miller's blonde bob, shown here at the 2015 Golden Globes. How perfect is this? It's edgy, adorable and flattering, and it manages to be a short haircut that still oozes sexiness.

Miller looks lovely in a bob, but she also looked phenomenal in long hair. Not all celebrities look as good in short, medium or long hair lengths.

Emma Stone's Graduated Bob With Side-Swept Bangs

Emma Stone's graduated bob. Getty Images

Refinery29 calls the texturized choppy bob seen here on Emma Stone "The Hairstyle of The Year," mainly because it seems so many celebrities are sporting the choppy bob at the moment. It's a gorgeous, versatile bob and edgier and sexier than the straight lines of the classic bob because it's mussy but could be blow-dried straight. Plus, it tends to work on almost all face shapes and with all hair textures, whether you have fine, wavy or coarse hair.

Stone's hairstyle got a ton of buzz in September 2014 when she debuted it. She wears her signature side-swept bangs with this look, but you could wear this cut sans bangs or with long bangs that sweep down to the ear. Blunt bangs would look great, too.

Actress Clemence Poesy

Clemence Poesy is sporting here what the beauty world has dubbed "The Baby Bob," which is loosely defined as the shorter, mussier version of the classic bob. Really, it's just another bob, but we have to come up with new names, don't we?

Note how mussy this bob is. Imperfection is what makes this hairstyle so charming.

Blunt Bangs Create a More Modern Bob

Bobs with blunt bangs are very modern. You can do so much with a bob hairstyle including blow-drying it straight, letting it air-dry into natural waves (scrunch with fingers as you go), flat-ironing it smooth, curling it with a curling iron or pinning it up.

For this particular look, you will want to blow dry your hair straight, apply a styling spray that protects against heat and then flat iron hair all over.

Try a Middle Part

Parting your hair in the middle is a great way to freshen up a hairstyle you've grown tired of. Not everyone can get away with a middle part. But it's a great option for anyone with a bob and a heart-, round, square or oval-shaped face.

Salon owner Rodney Cutler tells MSN's Glo that the best youthful, edgy and confident bob these days is the bob cut in the A-line style, as Yolanda Foster's cut is here.

A-line means the back is slightly shorter than the front, with an angle that can be seen from the side. The A-line is also called "graduated bobs" or "inverted bob hairstyles" and work nicely because they give hair movement, according to Cutler in Glamour magazine

Long Bob: Catherine McNeil's Mussy Long Bob

A gorgeous wavy bob hairstyle
Catherine McNeil. Numéro October 2012

This long bob is mussy. To get a mussy bob, spray in a beach salt spray (Bumble & Bumble's) and scrunch hair as it dries.

To blow dry this cut into a sleek bob, follow these directions:

1. A volumizing shampoo and mousse if you have fine hair. Notice how Catherine's hair is anything but limp.
2. A large, paddle brush. Don't use a rounded brush on this cut, because you don't want the ends to curl under.
3. A decent flatiron. (You can wear this look wavy, too).
4. A gloss spray for after you iron. Bumble and Bumble discontinued their Gloss, but their new Shine Spray gets high marks in the industry. Buy it from Amazon.com.

Violante Placido Funky, Mussy Bob

The long bob remains one of the most popular bob versions today. The long bob tends to be a bit longer than the classic bob (it should be at least 1-2 inches below the chin), and works on all face shapes and with all hair textures.

While this cut is a simple blunt cut with a few layers and parted on the side, you can also get a longer bob cut at an angle -- a tad shorter in back than in front and you can part this hairstyle in the middle if you choose (middle parts are a huge trend right now). According to Allure, the long bob can be a tad boring if cut too blunt. Stacked layers in the back will "give it some life."

Once the bob is cut, ask the stylist to "thin out the ends with scissors or a razor so they look slightly jagged," advises stylist Sally Hershberger says in Allure.

This cut on Violante Placido is a great example of how you can style a long bob so it's loose and not too stiff.

Brooklyn Decker's Long Bob

This season's bob hairstyles have a bit of curl to them, are a bit longer and can be worn mussy or curly, like Brooklyn Decker's here.

Hollywood hair guru Ted Gibson explained to MSN's Glo that he gave her a soft, textured bob to offset her strong jawline. "I created graduated layers and made the cut a little longer in the front. You want hair in the front to be below the jaw so that it doesn't draw the eye to that area of the face."

If you really want great-looking hair, you should learn to shampoo your hair properly. It turns out most of us break many shampooing rules when we step into the shower. We don't wet our hair enough, we don't focus enough attention on our scalps and we don't rinse out our conditioner.

Ali Larter's Long, Wavy Bob

This bob with just a bit of wave, like this hairstyle on actress Ali Larter, is a gorgeous look on all face shapes, particularly heart-shaped faces, says Larter's hairstylist Andy Lecompte in Allure Magazine.

According to Allure, Lecompte used thinning shears to soften up Larter's ends. He also added "invisible long layers" to her hair so it was less like a classic bob and more effortless and swingy. To get the beachy waves here, scrunch and tousle your hair as you blow-dry (or air-dry), then massage in a sea-salt spray. Lecompte uses Wella Professionals Ocean Spritz Beach Texture Hairspray.

The One-Length Bob

To get this this jaw-length bob, "ask that it be slightly shorter in the back with very subtle layering throughout," says stylist Chris McMillan in Allure magazine.

According to McMillan, this is a cut that works best on straight hair. You can add bangs to this look. Blunt ones would be gorgeous. If you have a slightly round face, ask for longer, side-swept bangs.

You'll need a good flat iron for this look.

Cameron Diaz

The best bobs for round faces tend to be long bobs with or without long, side-swept bangs.

Cameron Diaz (who has a round face), challenges this rule with a bob that she debuted in early 2012 (and has since grown out). Her hairstylist Lona Vigi told Allure Magazine this cut works best on straight or slightly wavy hair. Vigi spritzes on a texturizing spray while hair is still wet and uses a small vented brush to blow-dry the bangs to one side. She lets the rest of the hair air-dry. (Sounds easy-peasy).

Vigi spills the beans on Diaz's bangs, too: "I like bangs to hit around the bottom of the nose. It's the sexiest length," she tells Allure. "They're technically face-framing layers. But swept over the forehead, they give the illusion of bangs."

Vigi recommends if you have a round face to let the bob end just above the chin, and if you have a square face with a strong jaw, this bob will look better cut below the chin.

Katie Holmes' Classic Bob

Actress Katie Holmes. Photo by Getty Images/Getty Images for CDG

It's been several years since Katie Holmes sported this wonderful bob, but the bob has yet to go out of style. If you have fine hair, you'll find it won't get as flat with a bob hairstyle as it will if grown to the shoulders or longer. Consider a bob hairstyle featuring bangs, like this one.

You can change up the look of your bob by letting it dry naturally some days and other days blow-drying it straight.

Giuliana Rancic's Long Bob

Giuliana Rancic. Mike Coppola

When new mom Guiliana Rancic (born August 17, 1974) cut off her signature long hair for this A-line long bob, I was impressed. Long hair can be high-maintenance because it takes forever to dry and can look ratty when not styled on a daily basis. This cut is perfect for mothers because it looks good air dried, blown dried or even pulled back into a casual ponytail.

The A-line (also known as the "graduated bob") is a popular long bob option because it gives style and sophistication to an otherwise boring cut. Ask your stylist to cut your hair about an inch shorter in the back, allowing it to gradually get longer in the front.

January Jones's Long Bob

A long bob, like January Jones's hair here, can't be too layered, or it's not a bob. You will get a more edgy look if you ask the stylist to thin out the ends with scissors or a razor.

Ask the stylist to make your bob a touch shorter in the back.

This cut works on straight and wavy hair. It's a versatile cut because you can wear it wavy or flat-ironed.

Model Agyness Deyn

Long, side-swept bangs are by far the easiest bangs to get because they are less of a commitment than blunt bangs and they flatter every, single face shape.

These bangs on Agyness are a great example of side-swept bangs that are super long. You can either go in for trims every couple weeks or just let them grow out with your haircut. They should look great up until about 3 months. Seriously.

Rachael Taylor

To keep this look, you'll have to get regular bang trims -- or learn to cut your own.

This is what Taylor had to say to the New York Times about her beauty transformation on the set of her TV show “666 Park Avenue”:

"The biggest transformation required is my hair. I have a razored, chin-length bob in real life, and our hairstylist on the show takes my hair to long blond waves in about 40 minutes. That’s about five pounds of fake hair on my head daily. Of course everybody I know suggests a simple solution — 'Um, grow your hair out dude!' But I can’t, I feel sexiest when my hair is short."
