Army Job: MOS 91C Utilities Equipment Repairer

Like other branches of the U.S. military, the Army has a lot of utility equipment. It's the job of the utilities equipment repairer to make sure such systems as air conditioners and refrigeration units are maintained, repaired, and kept in top working condition.

The Army categorizes this job as military occupational specialty (MOS) 91C. While it may not seem like the most exciting job in the Army, utilities equipment repairers play a crucial role in keeping the Army and its soldiers running smoothly. MOS 91C is considered a part of the U.S. Army Ordnance Corps, a sustainment branch that supplies combat units with ammunition and weapons.

This corps is an important part of the Army's logistics system, and the MOS within it repair tanks, dispose of explosive ordnance, and repair missile launch systems. So these soldiers are part of a group without which the Army could not effectively function.

Duties of Army Utilities Equipment Repairers

The utilities equipment repairer is responsible for supervising and performing maintenance on utilities equipment and special purpose support systems. This can mean everything from the above-mentioned units to bottle cleaning and charging stations, portable heater fuel and electrical systems, fire extinguisher recharging systems, and fire extinguishers and valves. 

Training Information

Job training for a utilities equipment repairer requires 10 weeks of Basic Combat Training (boot camp) and 12 weeks of Advanced Individual Training. This advanced training takes place at Fort Lee in Virginia. 

Qualifying for MOS 91C

Soldiers interested in this job need at least a 98 in the general mechanical (GM) area of the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) tests, or an 88 in GM and an 83 in the general technical (GT) area of the ASVAB. 

There is no Department of Defense security clearance required for this job. But normal color vision (no colorblindness) is required. An affinity for shop mechanics and solid knowledge of mathematics will both prove useful to soldiers in this job.
